Cedarville Takes Two From Panthers to Open Series

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (17-15, 8-8 G-MAC) baseball played in half of the scheduled series on the road against the Cedarville Yellow Jackets (8-25, 4-12 G-MAC) on Saturday (April 13).

After inclement weather postponed Friday's openers to a later date, Cedarville took the first two games of the series with wins of 6-4 and 9-8.

Game 1 (L, 6-4)

Ohio Dominican turned an early Cedarville error into a run in the first inning. Peter Jelenic (Medina, Ohio) reached third base on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio). Cedarville bounced back with four runs in the second inning, taking a 4-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Cedarville added a run to make the score 5-1. Ohio Dominican's rally began to flourish in the seventh inning with one run crossing the plate. Jake Scherette (Brunswick, Ohio) was the victim of catcher's interference, allowing him to reach first base. Drew Emerson (Germantown, Ohio) followed with a double, pushing Scherette to third base. Jelenic grounded out to first base, scoring Scherette from third.

The eighth inning was a patient one for the Panthers, driving home two runs with walks. Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) singled before Jack Mathey (Copley, Ohio) was hit by a pitch and Spencer Tammaro (New Albany, Ohio) walked to load the bases at no outs. Following a pitching change, CJ Dean (Columbus, Ohio) and Emerson both walked with the bases loaded to plate Marshall and Mathey. Ohio Dominican trailed 5-4 with the game nearing the end.

A dropped fly ball in the eighth inning for ODU allowed the Yellow Jackets to extend the lead to 6-4, where the home team was able to win the opening game of the series.

Hunt had two hits for his 15th multi-hit game of the season while adding a walk and RBI. Tammaro walked twice as ODU had six walks for the game.

Michael Lesiecki (Uhrichsville, Ohio) allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits. He walked one and struck out four batters in his five innings of work. Chance Woods (Columbus, Ohio) pitched a scoreless sixth inning with two walks and two strikeouts. Trayce Mercer (Troy, Ohio) surrendered one unearned run in two innings for his relief outing.

Game 2 (L, 9-8 in 7 innings)

Just like the first game, the Panthers started off on top in the first inning. Jordan Daniels (Blacklick, Ohio) walked and stole second as the leadoff batter. Marshall and Mathey combined for back-to-back RBI doubles as ODU led 2-0. Two first inning runs for Cedarville and one in the second inning put the Jackets up 3-2. That lead stood until the final three innings where 12 runs were scored between the two teams.

Hunt doubled in the fifth inning as Marshall singled behind him to put runners on the corners. Marshall swiped second base and the catcher's throw ended up off line and Hunt scored on the error. Mathey doubled home Marshall for the second time in the game as ODU regained a 4-3 lead. Cedarville responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking a 5-4 lead into the sixth inning.

Four Panther runs in the sixth created some distance to take back the lead. Michael O'Callaghan (Morrow, Ohio) came off the bench and took a walk before Scherette pinch ran for him. Jelenic and Jonah Hane (Blacklick, Ohio) each singled as the bases were loaded. Hunt greeted a new Cedarville pitcher with a two-run single. A fielder's choice loaded the bases once more and Jacob Adams (Troy, Ohio) doubled home two more runs for an 8-5 Panther lead. Two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh allowed Cedarville to walk-off with a 9-8 win in the nightcap.

After notching 12 hits as a team, Adams and Marshall each had three hits while Hunt and Mathey added two hits of their own. Three different players plated a pair of runs (Hunt, Mathey and Adams). Five of the 12 hits were of the two-bagger variety.

Brian Allen (Troy, Ohio) started and allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in his four and one third innings. Andrew Deyhle (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) were tagged for two runs each in their respective outings at least one inning.

Ohio Dominican will return back to Panther Valley to finish up the series with #13 Ashland on Tuesday (April 16). The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 PM.
