Baseball Splits Final Two Games in Florida

DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (7-4) baseball team ended the week of games at the 2024 RussMatt Invitational with games on Tuesday (March 5) and Wednesday (March 6).

The major offensive attack carried over into Tuesday's first game against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs before weather washed out the nightcap. The second game was halted in the second inning with no score, therefore making it a "no contest." Wednesday saw the Panthers and Seton Hill Griffins battle for the third time in two weeks. Seton Hill won the Florida finale 17-6.

Tuesday vs. Minnesota Duluth (W, 13-2)

Minnesota Duluth started the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning as the Panthers followed it up in the bottom half of the inning to take the 2-1 lead. A single, hit by pitch and walk loaded the bases with one out. A passed ball scored the first run while Peter Jelenic (Medina, Ohio) added a sacrifice fly to left field.

The game was tied in the third inning but a eight-run fourth inning for Ohio Domincan blew the game open. 11 batters stepped to the plate for the Panthers to create a 10-2 lead. Another passed ball opened the floodgates before Spencer Tammaro (New Albany, Ohio) doubled home a pair of runners. Michael McFadden (Brunswick, Ohio) and Jack Mathey (Copley, Ohio) added RBI singles with the big blow coming from CJ Dean (Columbus, Ohio) on a two-run double. Jake Scherette (Brunswick, Ohio) capped the big inning with a sacrifice fly.

Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) RBI single came across in the fifth inning with Dean walking in a run with the bases loaded. Drew Emerson (Germantown, Ohio) ended the scoring with a bases loaded walk in the sixth inning. ODU won 13-2.

Tammaro, Marshall, Mathey and Dean all managed two hits with eight different players driving in a run. Tammaro, Dean, Scherette and Jelenic scored twice each.

Brian Allen (Troy, Ohio) went the distance for the second straight start, allowing two runs in seven innings. He scattered six hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.

Wednesday vs. Seton Hill (L, 17-6)

Marshall got the scoring started bright and early Wednesday with a RBI single to score Tammaro, who doubled in the first inning. Seton Hill took the lead half an inning later with two runs. Tammaro singled home the tying run in the second inning with the Griffins scoring three runs, taking a 5-2 after two innings.

Dean blasted his fourth home run of the season in the third inning. As soon as the Panthers scored, Seton Hill responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

Tammaro and Marshall went back-to-back with solo home runs in the fifth inning. McFadden tied the game with a ball past a diving left fielder as the game was knotted at six.

Seton Hill used 11 runs in the fifth inning to enact a run-rule win in seven innings, 17-6.

Tammaro finished with three hits on a single, double and home run with two runs scored and two RBI. Marshall and  Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) reached base twice with two singles.

Tyler Von Bergan (Blacklick, Ohio) made his Panther debut with one and one third innings of shutout ball in the bullpen.

Ohio Dominican will host the California (Pa.) Vulcans in Panther Valley on Thursday (March 14) for the home opener, a single game at 2:00 PM.
