Volleyball Upsets #2 Northwood in G-MAC Quarterfinal

MIDLAND, Michigan - The Ohio Dominican women's volleyball team delivered an electrifying performance in the G-MAC quarterfinals, pulling off a thrilling reverse sweep against #2-seeded Northwood in Michigan. The Panthers secured a 3-2 victory, advancing to face Walsh in the semifinals. 

With standout performances across the board, the Panthers refused to back down and emerged victorious in one of their most impressive matches of the season. 

Senior Lauren Lucas anchored the offense, tallying 19 kills, 10 digs, and one ace, proving to be an all-around force at the net. Libero Lauren Dinunzi shined on defense, amassing a staggering 33 digs and contributing six assists. Setter Gabrielle Kirker facilitated the offense with precision, recording 28 assists, 11 digs, and one ace. 

Additionally, the dynamic duo of Ashley Aselage and Jenna Peters combined for 29 kills, playing pivotal roles in key moments that kept the Panthers alive. 

Set 1: The Timberwolves wasted no time establishing control, leaping to a 13-8 lead. A 7-point run late in the set gave Northwood a commanding 21-14 edge. Despite Ohio Dominican's efforts, Northwood closed the set with a decisive 25-17 win, setting the tone for the match. 

Set 2: Northwood again jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but Ohio Dominican found their rhythm and rallied to tie the set at 13-13. Behind strong kills from Aselage and Peters, the Panthers even managed a 19-18 lead. However, two late Timberwolves attacks proved too much, and Northwood narrowly claimed the set, 26-24. 

Set 3: Facing elimination, Ohio Dominican roared to life in the third set. After falling behind 8-4, the Panthers went on a 7-point surge to take a 14-9 lead. Northwood battled back with a 5-point run, but Ohio Dominican held their ground. A scrappy finish saw the Panthers edge the Timberwolves 25-23, keeping their tournament hopes alive. 

Set 4: Northwood appeared poised to close out the match, taking a commanding 16-8 lead. Yet, the Panthers refused to give in, chipping away at the deficit with small runs. A 6-point surge late in the set put Ohio Dominican ahead 22-20, and they held on to clinch a dramatic 25-23 win, forcing a decisive fifth set. 

Set 5: The final set was as tight as the rest of the match, with six ties keeping the tension high. With the score knotted at 10-10, Ohio Dominican delivered a crucial 3-point run to gain a 14-10 advantage. After a hard-fought rally, the Panthers secured the final point, taking the set 15-12 and completing the reverse sweep. 

The intense five-set battle saw a remarkable 28 ties and 16 lead changes.

With the win, Ohio Dominican advances to face Walsh in the G-MAC semifinals on Friday at 7:30 PM. Walsh is riding high after a dominant sweep of #3 Ashland in their quarterfinal match. The Panthers will look to carry their momentum into another challenging matchup as they aim to continue their postseason run.
