Early Lead Not Enough in 31-13 Defeat at Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (2-4, 1-3) football team was on the road for the second straight contest, heading to the northwest corner of the Buckeye State for a Great Midwest contest on Saturday (Oct. 12) with the Tiffin Dragons (4-2, 3-1). 

Tiffin bounced back from an early ODU lead, taking a 31-13 win at Frost-Kalnow Stadium. 

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Drew Gallehue had a passing line of 11-of-28 with one interception and 138 yards.  
  • Shane Lindstrom carried the ball 11 times for a team-high 28 yards. 
    • He also made three kick returns for 60 yards. 
  • Dimitri Mitsopoulos totaled 187 all-purpose yards with 61 receiving yards on four catches along with 119 kickoff return yards and seven on a single punt return. 
    • Mitsopoulos had a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown - the fifth longest in program history. 
  • Jayden Cornell finished with three catches for 45 yards. 
  • Michael Powers had his eighth career game of at least ten tackles with ten stops in the game. 
  • DeShannon Butler made nine tackles with a sack of 12 yards. 
  • Caleb Taylor, Gavin Linkous and Daishaun Hill all caught interceptions on defense. Hill is now all alone in fourth place with ten career picks. Taylor and Linkous both made their first interceptions of their career. 
  • AJ Young kicked two field goals of 23 and 29 yards on top of six punts for an average of 37.0 yards. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tiffin's first drive was ended on the second play from scrimmage as Hill intercepted an Alex Johnson pass. With a short field, the Panthers kicked a 23-yard field goal by Young to lead 3-0 with 10:18 left in the first quarter. 
  • The next drive for the Dragons ended in a fourth down stop by the Panthers. On fourth and five in the red zone, Butler sacked Johnson to give ODU the ball back up 3-0 with 6:47 to go in the first. 
  • ODU came up with another fourth down stop later in the first quarter, stuffing a fourth and two at the 31-yard line. 
  • Tiffin's first drive of the second quarter turned into points with a one-yard touchdown by Ronald Blackman, taking a 7-3 lead with 8:19 before halftime. 
  • Ben Rudolph added a 33-yard field goal as the first half ended, giving Tiffin a 10-3 lead at the intermission. 
  • Gallehue was intercepted on the second play of the second half as Tiffin got a 21-yard pick six from Chucky Lewis for a 17-3 lead. 
  • Five minutes later, Johnson connected with Blackman for a 21-yard touchdown. The lead grew to 24-3 with just over nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. 
  • Mitsopoulos answered with a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as ODU cut the lead to 24-10.
  • Johnson started the next drive with an interception by Linkous. Four plays later, Young made a 29-yard field goal to continue cutting into the lead at 24-13. 
  • Three plays later, the third ODU pick came by Taylor. The Panthers got into the red zone but could not convert on a fourth and long at the 23 inside of two minutes left in the third. 
  • Both teams exchanged a number of stalled drives until Blackman iced the game for Tiffin with a 62-yard rushing touchdown for the 31-13 final score, scoring with 3:48 left.
