Offense Fuels Tiffin Sweep, Winning Streak Hits Eight Games

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers baseball team completed a four-game sweep with the help of 60 runs scored and 62 hits against the Tiffin Dragons. Six players hit better than .300 for the series.

ODU won games of 12-6 and 18-10 on Thursday (April 20) before taking the Saturday (April 22) doubleheader with scores of 11-0 and 19-14. The Panthers have won eight straight games and sit at 23-18 overall and 15-9 in the G-MAC. The team hit .419 overall and a slugging % of .750.

GAME ONE (W, 12-6)

Ohio Dominican put together four multi-run innings in a 12-6 win in the series opener.

Three errors in the first inning allowed the Dragons to take a 1-0 lead. ODU bounced back with three runs in the second inning for a 3-1 lead. David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) opened the inning with a walk and Devan Nail (Elyria, Ohio) followed with a double. Silva came home to score on a sacrifice fly from Michael McFadden (Brunswick, Ohio), tying the game at one. Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) walked before Nail and Brill scored on a two-run error by the Tiffin third baseman with Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) at the plate.
Four runs scored in the fifth inning as six consecutive batters reached base. After two singles and a fielder's choice, Silva singled home the first run before Nail delivered a three-run home run to left field. Ohio Dominican led 7-1 at the halfway point.

On the help of three hits, two errors and a few passed balls, ODU continued to add on runs in the seventh inning. Jack Mathey (Copley, Ohio) led off with a single and moved on an error during the same play. A passed ball advanced him to third before Silva got to first on an error. He swiped second base as both runners scored on a two-run single by Nail. A single, fielder's choice and another passed ball scored Nail as the lead grew to 10-1. Tiffin scored two runs in the seventh inning as they trimmed the deficit to 10-3.

Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) and Mathey went back-to-back to begin the eighth inning. Marshall went deep to right field while Mathey hit a ball deep to left. ODU led 12-3 before Tiffin scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth but could not get any closer than 12-6.

Nail ended the game four-of-five with two doubles, a home run and five RBI while scoring three times. Silva and Mathey had two hits and three runs scored each. Marshall was the fourth player with multiple hits.

Michael Lesiecki (Ulrichsville, Ohio) struck out six batters and allowed three runs in 6.1 innings pitched, getting his fourth win of the season. Brill followed with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief work, working around a hit and two walks. Andrew Mouch (Cincinnati, Ohio) threw a scoreless ninth inning after Tiffin scored their final runs.

GAME TWO (W, 18-10)

Tiffin spotted ODU a 9-0 lead in the first inning before ODU scored 18 unanswered runs in the next six innings, including five multi-run frames. The Panthers won the Thursday nightcap 18-10.

After the nine-run first inning for the home team, Ohio Dominican began their slow climb out of the hole in the second inning. Silva walked to kick off the inning and consecutively stole second and third base. Mason Kurtz (Ostrander, Ohio) singled home Silva for the first ODU run. Four runs crossed the plate in the third inning with the help of two blasts. Jordan Daniels (Blacklick, Ohio) started the inning with an error and stolen base. Mathey was the front end of the fireworks, a two-run shot to left field with Silva following on a solo shot to left center field. Nail doubled and scored on a Brill RBI single. The lead was cut to 9-5 with more runs coming shortly after.

Tiffin got the first two outs of the fourth inning but that didn't phase ODU. Daniels walked and got into scoring position for a RBI single by Marshall. Mathey homered for the second straight inning as ODU got within 9-8 on his third round-tripper of the day so far. Two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning. Kurtz tied the game on a RBI single with a passed ball giving ODU the 10-9 lead. Daniels added two more runs with a single through the right side. Ohio Dominican had a 12-9 lead in the fifth.

Mathey teed off for the third time in the contest, a lead-off bomb in the sixth inning. Tiffin walked Silva and then surrendered a two-run homer to Brill as the lead ballooned to 15-9.  In the final inning, the Panthers finished off the game with three final runs. Hunt tripled as the first batter of the inning. A fielder's choice by Daniels got Hunt to home plate. Marshall followed with a single as both runners scored on a two-run double from Silva. The Dragons got their final run in the seventh inning, concluding the day at 18-10.

Six players had multi-hit efforts with Marshall, Mathey and Silva with three hits each. All three of Mathey's hits were home runs, the first three home run game in the Division II era for ODU. He ended with five RBI and three runs scored. Daniels accounted for three RBI and three runs. Silva drove in three runs, swiped four bases and scored three times. Brill plated three runs of his own with a walk and hit by pitch.

Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio) gave the Panthers three and one third scoreless frames out of the bullpen. He struck out three and kept the Dragons at bay as ODU came back. Nail worked a scoreless inning as well with two strikeouts. Hunt punched out three batters in his two innings of work.

GAME THREE (W, 11-0)

The offense continued to swing but the pitching was even better in Saturday's first game. ODU made an early two runs stick in an 11-0 shutout.

RBI singles by Kurtz and Daniels put the Panthers up 2-0 in the second inning. Four runs in the fourth blew the game open with ten men coming to the plate. A passed ball started the scoring before RBI singles by Hunt and Nail and a RBI groundout by Marshall made it 6-0.

Mathey's weekend tear continued with a RBI single in the fifth inning as it was 7-0. One more four-run inning punctuated an 11-0 win in the cold opener. Marshall tripled home a run and scored himself with a passed ball. Mathey doubled and came home on a Silva RBI single. Nail ended the scoring on a RBI single of his own.

With 16 hits, the Panthers saw the top five spots in the lineup account for 11 hits, seven RBI and six runs scored. Daniels had the lone three hit contest with Marshall, Mathey, Silva, Brill and Kurtz all with two base knocks. ODU stole ten bases, a season-high. Daniels had four steals with Brill taking three bases.

Marshall Flynn (Heath, Ohio) went the distance with a complete-game shutout. He allowed six hits (all singles) with seven strikeouts.

GAME FOUR (W, 19-14)

ODU avenged another eight-run deficit with yet another comeback in the series finale. Tiffin led 9-1 after one inning before the Panthers took the 19-14 win to complete the sweep.

The Panthers started the scoring in the first inning as Mathey was hit by a pitch. He came around to score on a RBI single by Nail. Tiffin answered with nine runs in the bottom half of the first inning.

ODU loaded the bases in the second inning en route to a five-run inning. Two walks and an error put Marshall at the plate for a two-run single. Mathey blasted his fifth home run of the series, a three-run shot. Just like that, ODU was down 9-6. Tiffin put three runs back on the scoreboard in the second inning, regaining a six-run advantage at 12-6.

A Tiffin third inning home run was book-ended by two innings with four-baggers for the Panthers. Brill homered in the third inning with two blasts in the fourth inning. Marshall left the yard with a runner on base and three batters later, Nail cleared the bases for a three-run homer. As the game headed to the bottom of the fourth, ODU got within a run at 13-12.

Tiffin scored in the fourth inning to put a little cushion between the teams. Six runs were scored in the sixth inning for the Panthers as they fully regained control. Eight consecutive batters reached base. With the bases loaded, ODU scored runs on two errors and a RBI walk by Daniels. Three more runs scored on a wild pitch, a balk and a RBI single from Silva. ODU led 18-14 as the game headed towards darkness.

A sacrifice fly in the eighth inning completed the scoring by Marshall before the ninth inning was erased by darkness.

Silva and Brill had three hits in the finale. Mathey scored four times on two hits with three RBI. Marshall plated six runs in the game on two hits. Hunt, Daniels and Brill each scored three times. Nail added four RBI of his own.

Tyler Sullivan (Madiera, Ohio) struck out four in two innings of relief with Max Whitesell (Dayton, Ohio) closing the game with two scoreless innings.

The Panthers will host Trevecca Nazarene this upcoming weekend in Panther Valley. The schedule is set for contests on Friday (April 28) and Saturday (April 29).
