Major Comeback Highlights Panthers Slugfest at UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - Tuesday's (April 11) non-conference matchup saw a little bit of everything between the Ohio Dominican Panthers and the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds at Greyhound Park.

After falling behind 18-4 in the fourth inning, Ohio Dominican scored 15 unanswered runs to come all the way back. The teams exchanged runs in the final three innings as ODU fell 24-23 in 11 innings. The contest lasted nearly five hours with a combined 47 runs, 48 hits, 18 walks and eight errors. Ohio Dominican set G-MAC highs in the following categories on Tuesday: total bases (41), hits (24), runs (23), RBI (20). They tied the most doubles with six and were second with eight stolen bases.

David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) and Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) put together five-hit performances while Silva set an ODU and G-MAC record with six runs scored.

UIndy scored first with two runs in the opening inning before Silva teed off on a pitch for a solo home run in the 2nd inning, cutting the lead to 2-1.

The Greyhounds plated seven runs in the second inning and two in the third for an 11-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, a run scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded before Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) lined a two-run double to left center field. UIndy tallied seven runs in the bottom half of the inning, expanding the lead to 18-4.

15 men stepped to the plate in a 12-run fifth inning, the largest inning for ODU since a 14-run inning on April 17, 2021 against Ohio Valley. Marshall singled before Jack Mathey (Copley, Ohio) reached on an error. Silva singled home Marshall before Michael McFadden (Brunswick, Ohio) had a RBI groundout to score Mathey. Silva swiped third base before Devan Nail (Elyria, Ohio) walked. Michael O'Callaghan (Morrow, Ohio) continued with a RBI single. Mason Kurtz (Ostrander, Ohio) hit into a fielder's choice and stole second base. Hunt doubled home two more runners and moved to third base on a steal. Jordan Daniels (Blacklick, Ohio) brought Hunt in with a RBI single and stole second base for the team's fourth steal of the inning. Marshall had his second single of the frame, this time a RBI knock to center field. After a pitching change, the scoring did not stop as ODU scored four more runs. Silva drove in his second run of the inning and scored his second run on a RBI single by McFadden that turned into an error. One more pitching change happened in the inning as Nail delivered a two-run homer as ODU had closed the gap to 18-16 at the halfway point.

While holding the 'Hounds scoreless, the Panthers continued to chip away at the lead with a run in the seventh inning. Silva doubled as the leadoff man and stole third base. A sacrifice fly from McFadden got the Panthers within one run, 18-17 at the seventh inning stretch.

Heading into the ninth inning, the rally wasn't totally done yet. Mathey doubled to kick off the final inning of regulation. A bunt single by Silva put two runners on base. Silva stole second base as a fielder's choice by McFadden loaded the bases. Nail singled home two runs as Ohio Dominican completed an improbable comeback, taking a 19-18 lead. UIndy forced extra innings with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

The tenth inning saw three runs on each side, forcing another inning. Hunt started with a single and a wild pitch moved him over. Daniels sacrificed him into scoring position as Hunt scored on a RBI groundout by Marshall. Mathey teed off with a solo home run to center field as ODU gained a 21-19 lead. A Silva walk and McFadden double got the Hounds to make a pitching change. The new pitcher uncorked a wild pitch for the third run of the inning. Indianapolis tallied the game-tying runs without a hit as the game turned into the 11th inning.

For the third straight inning, ODU took the lead in the top half. Kurtz was hit by a pitch and got to second on a wild pitch. An infield single got the leading run into scoring position. Marshall got the Panthers a 23-22 lead with a RBI single.
