Swords Down: Panthers Rally for Road Win at Walsh

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers football team scratched and clawed their way out of a ten-point deficit in the second half on the road on Saturday (Oct. 14) afternoon. 

On an overcast Fall afternoon, Ohio Dominican flipped the swords on the Walsh Cavaliers for a 12-10 win at Larry Staudt Field. Ohio Dominican got their second straight win, improving to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the G-MAC. 

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Jake Byrd (Fort Wayne, Indiana) finished the game with 185 yards passing with two passing touchdowns. 
  • Travis Whittaker (Gahanna, Ohio) carried the ball 26 times for 76 yards. 
  • Ty Wiley (Pickerington, Ohio) was one of two Panthers with four catches on the afternoon. Wiley finished with 54 yards and one receiving touchdown.
    • He added 44 yards on kickoff returns for a total of 98 all-purpose yards. 
  • Zach Bartrum (Meigs County, Ohio) caught the first touchdown pass of the game as a part of his three catch day for 45 yards. 
  • Jayden Cornell (Kenton, Ohio) had four catches for 31 yards. 
  • Qwyn Williams (Gahanna, Ohio) led the Panthers with eight tackles (2.0 TFL) and 1.5 sacks.  
  • Eddie Miller-Garrett (Newark, New Jersey) added five tackles, 2.0 TFL and one sack.
  • Michael Powers (West Mansfield, Ohio) and Daishaun Hill (Rocky River, Ohio) combined for another 1.5 sacks. 
  • DeShannon Butler (Columbus, Ohio) picked off the only interception for the Panthers. 
  • Ohio Dominican totaled nine tackles for loss and four sacks. 
  • The Panthers won the total offense category with 282 total yards, 185 passing and 97 rushing. 
  • Walsh was held to 29 yards rushing as they were the 11st lowest output by an opposing offense.  
    • ODU has held teams under 100 yards rushing 14 times since the beginning of the 2021 season and teams have been held to under 50 yards four times this season. 
  • ODU posted a time of possession of 33:06, just below the season-high. 
    • The Panthers possessed the ball for 9:52 in the first quarter and ten minutes for the fourth quarter. 
  • Ohio Dominican was seven-of-18 on third down conversions. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Walsh cashed in on an interception by ODU, taking a 7-0 lead on a ten-yard touchdown pass with 9:26 left in the first quarter. 
  • The Cavaliers added a 29-yard field goal in the second quarter and led 10-0 at the half. 
  • In the final minutes of the third quarter, Ohio Dominican got on the board with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Byrd to Bartrum. With the extra point being no good, ODU trailed 10-6 after three frames. 
  • Butler's interception opened the fourth quarter and ODU turned the turnover into points. Byrd connected with Wiley from 29 yards for the leading score. With 10:19 left, ODU took a 12-10 with a missed extra point. 
  • Walsh missed a go-ahead field goal with 5:13 left and the defense snuffed out a fourth-down stop with two seconds left to win the game.
