Panthers Battle Bearcats To 2-2 Draw In Sunday Showdown

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team concluded its opening week homestand as they welcomed McKendree University to Sunbury Road on Sunday afternoon. Both teams came into the final contest of the weekend in search of their first victory of the young season.

McKendree started strong as forward James Stone gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. ODU answered swiftly as Shingai Nindi (Shanghai, China) tallied his first goal of the season to level the game at 1-1.

Just two minutes later the Bearcats orchestrated a response as Eddie Davis beat the Panther goalkeeper to establish a 2-1 advantage in the first quarter of an hour. The Black and Gold pushed for an equalizer as Khalif Hassan (Columbus, Ohio) found two scoring opportunities just before the half-hour mark in the first half.

ODU began the second half strong outshooting the visitors by a margin of 15-5. Nindi continued to hunt for a second goal and received assistance from teammates Griffin Cook (Whitehouse, Ohio) and Jaxson Szabo (Worthington, Ohio). Each Panther player contributed with quality scoring opportunities in the opening moments of the second half.

Nindi would breakthrough in the 65th minute as he collected his brace and brought the Panthers back level with the Bearcats. The game picked up in physicality as both teams accumulated yellow cards during the second stanza. ODU was presented with a chance to claim victory in the dying moments of the contest as Hassan was fouled in the penalty area by McKendree goalkeeper Alvaro Cortazar.

Hassan couldn't convert his penalty kick and the game was forced into extra time. Both teams traded chances, but neither could claim an advantage as the contest ended in a 2-2 draw.

SUPURB SHINGAI

The sophomore continues to perform at a high level since the spring season and collected the first brace of his college career with his performance on Sunday afternoon. He is the most accurate shooter on the Black and Gold with 71-percent of his shots being on target.
