Panthers Win Overtime Thriller To Extend Winning Streak To Five Games

Box Score

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team increased its winning streak to a robust five matches in a row with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory on the road at Lake Erie College on Sunday afternoon.

The Black and Gold showed its dominance throughout the contest, and it yielded results. ODU led in shots by a 22-13 margin and enjoyed a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Shingai Nindi (Shanghai, China) led the visitors in shots with three for the contest and would play a role in the final goal. The Panthers looked to have claimed the lead in the 17th minute when senior River Allbaugh (Pickerington, Ohio) appeared to score but the goal was waved off due to an offside call.

Neither team found the scoresheet in the first half, but Lake Erie struck to claim a lead in the 61st minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. With 11 minutes remaining in the contest, senior Jaxson Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) found the back of the net off an assist from forward Carter Patchett (Dublin, Ohio) to level the contest at 1-1 in the dying moments.

Only one overtime would be needed as the Panthers struck in the 99th minute as Nindi tallied his fifth goal of the season and the first game-winning goal of his career to give the Black and Gold the win.

THE STREAK IS ALIVE

With Sunday's victory, the Panthers extended their winning streak to five games. That is their best run since the 2017 season when the Black and Gold won six consecutive matches to close out the season and punch a ticket into the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament.

NINDI FOR GOLDEN BOOT?

The sensational sophomore has been in terrific form this fall and continues to impress in conference play. With his game-winning goal on Sunday afternoon, Nindi is tied for the lead in the G-MAC with five goals in seven games. He shares the honor with Nick McCracken of the University of Findlay.

UP NEXT

The ODU road trip continues Saturday, October 2, when the Panthers head to Cedarville University for a rematch of their September 16th clash. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
