A Day Of Firsts As Men's Soccer Enjoys Offensive Explosion At California (PA)

Box Score

CALIFORNIA, Pennsylvania – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team exploded for a season-high four goals during Saturday's 4-1 victory over the University of California (PA). The Black and Gold saw three members of its ranks tally the opening goals of their collegiate careers.

Junior midfielder Jack Hayes (New Albany, Ohio), sophomore midfielder Griffin Cook (Whitehouse, Ohio), and sophomore forward Abdoul Mamadou (Columbus, Ohio) each tallied the first goals of their Panther careers.

Cook was the first to collect his goal as his shot from 30 yards out in the 15th minute beat the Vulcan goalkeeper to his right to give the Black and Gold a 1-0 lead. ODU doubled its lead in the 22nd minute when senior River Allbaugh (Pickerington, Ohio) converted his penalty kick following a Vulcan foul in the box.

California attempted to mount a comeback near the end of the first half as the hosts forced a save from goalkeeper Corey Pulles (Pickerington, Ohio). The keeper dove to the ground and was able to preserve his team's lead heading into the latter moments of the period. Mamadou grabbed his goal shortly after the half-hour mark as his shot dipped to beat the Vulcan goalkeeper Trevor Zibilowicz to his right and swell the lead to 3-0 heading toward the end of the first half.

Fresh out of the halftime break the Panthers struck once more as Heyes grew the lead to 4-0 as his shot found its way past Zibilowicz into the upper right corner of the net.

The hosts didn't go away quietly as they worked to break up the Panther shutout. Cal defender Adam Wood was presented with a quality opportunity in the 87th minute but his shot was off the mark. The Vulcans broke through with a minute remaining as forward Zach Vanek converted a penalty kick to cut the lead to 4-1 with less than 60 seconds remaining in the contest. ODU held firm and captured their first victory of the season.
