Panthers Rally in Fifth Set to Top Dragons at Home

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team won the first two sets and then capped its match versus Tiffin with a 15-13 decision in a decisive fifth set on Tuesday afternoon inside Alumni Hall.

The Panthers won the opening two sets, 25-23 and 25-17 prior to taking the last game. ODU's win improves the team to 7-4 this winter. Tiffin rallied and won sets three and four, 25-12 and 25-22, but falling in the fifth game drops the Dragons to 6-4 overall and in the Great Midwest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set saw ODU and Tiffin combine for 13 ties and seven lead changes. Nine kills and a combined .412 hitting percentage from Fecht and Maxwell pushed the Panthers over the Dragons late in the set, 25-23.
  • Ohio Dominican closed the first set on a 5-1 scoring run. The Black & Gold took advantage of two attacking errors by TU and a kill each from Fecht and Maxwell to win the opening game.
  • Both teams traded points early in the second set, but a 9-0 scoring run from ODU, forcing Tiffin into both of its timeouts, led to a 17-9 Panther advantage. Remmetter collected six kills in the set to pace the offensive attack.
  • Tiffin took advantage of ODU's negative hitting percentage in the third game, while also hitting .361 for the set. The Dragons then used a late scoring run in the fourth set to win the game 25-22 and tie the match at two sets apiece.
  • In the final game, Tiffin built on its momentum from the prior sets to score the first three points. ODU though, rallied and eventually took the lead, 11-9, thanks to an 8-3 scoring spurt.
  • Remmetter posted two kills during the scoring run, which was capped by a block from Fecht and Smith, and a kill by Maxwell.
  • Tied at 13-all, Fecht sealed the win for the Panthers with back-to-back kills, the last coming on a swing from the right side.

UP NEXT

  • With the cancellation of its match scheduled for Thursday, March 4, against Salem, ODU will now break until next Tuesday, March 9, for the Great Midwest Tournament.
  • ODU's opponent, location and time for its first G-MAC postseason appearance are still to be determined.
