Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican women's basketball team led for over 26 minutes Saturday afternoon, but fell in overtime to conference-rival Malone, 69-61, inside Alumni Hall.
In its first overtime game since Feb. 9, 2019, the Panthers were outscored 14-6 in the extra session to fall to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in Great Midwest play. Malone, winners of four straight, improves to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the G-MAC.
Junior Angela Troyer (Sugarcreek, Ohio) scored 11 of her team-high 14 points after halftime. Troyer added seven rebounds as well. Joining in the starting lineup was senior Brittleigh Macaulay (Big Prairie, Ohio), who finished with seven points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Junior Olivia Fox (Newark, Ohio) added eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks, which ties a career high.
The Panther bench provided 24 points, led by senior Hannah Clark (Glenmont, Ohio) with eight. Sophomores Alli Kern (Waterford, Ohio) and Kennedy Schlabach (Millersburg, Ohio) combined for 12 points. Kern tallied seven points, nine rebounds, three assists and tied a career high with three steals. Schlabach added five points and a team-best five assists.
Malone jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first quarter, but the Panthers used a 13-2 run, capped by a three-point play from Troyer, to go in front 15-9. The Pioneers added a basket near the end of the quarter, making the score 15-11 in favor of ODU.
After the score was tied at 15-all, a Kern trey but the Panthers back in front. The Black & Gold never trailed for the remainder of the first half, leading by as many as six points, which was the halftime margin, 25-19.
A pair of free throws from Troyer to start the third quarter gave ODU its largest lead of the game at 27-19. Malone though, rallied to close its deficit to one point at the end of the frame, 40-39.
The Pioneers brought the momentum into the fourth quarter, where they took their first lead in over 24 minutes of game action at 44-43. With eight minutes left to play and now trailing, ODU responded with a 5-0 run to take a 48-44 advantage with 6:18 remaining.
However, Malone answered once again, this time with a 9-0 scoring spurt to recapture the lead at 53-48 with just under four minutes to play in regulation. A three-pointer from Troyer and a layup from Fox though, tied the game in the final two minutes, as regulation finished in a 55-55 stalemate.
The first overtime game of the season for the Panthers saw the Pioneers control throughout. Malone would go on to outscore ODU 14-6 in the extra five-minute session to secure the 69-61 victory, and snapped a seven-game losing skid against the Black & Gold.
Both sides shot under 40 percent in the game and ODU enjoyed a 51-30 edge on the glass. 17 offensive rebounds led to 15 second chance points for the Panthers. Malone though, forced 29 giveaways and scored 24 points off turnovers.
Ohio Dominican will look to bounce back when it hosts Walsh at 3 p.m., Monday, Dec. 16.
