Volleyball falls at home to nationally-ranked Wheeling

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team tussled with top-20 Wheeling (W. Va.) Tuesday evening in Alumni Hall, but fell in the non-conference match, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-21).

The Cardinals (14-3), who entered the match No. 20 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll, scored four of the first five points in the opening set, before extending their early advantage to as many as eight points. Wheeling then closed the set with four of the final six points to win 25-15.

After conceding four of the first five points again in the second frame, ODU bounced back to pull within one point, 16-15, thanks to a 6-0 scoring run. Sophomore Amanda Remmetter (Springfield, Ohio) recorded 2.5 points during the stretch (2 kills, 0.5 blocks), while classmates Abbi Gillson (Canton, Ohio) and Trinity Mixon (Cleveland, Ohio) were in on rejections as well. Another 6-0 spurt by the Panthers (1-15), capped by a kill from Gillson, tied the set at 21-21. The Cardinals though, registered a kill and three blocks to secure the set, 25-21.

Needing to win the third set to stay alive in the match, the Black & Gold led for most of the frame, and a 7-3 scoring stretch, capped by a kill from freshman Kamryn Maxwell (Norwalk, Ohio), gave them a 16-12 advantage. Wheeling rallied to tie the set at 21-21, and again took the final four points to earn a 25-21 set decision.

There were six ties and five lead changes in the third set alone. Overall, there were eight ties and six lead changes. Wheeling enjoyed an 11-4 edge in blocks, while also hitting .216 to ODU's .048.

Gillson led the Panthers with nine kills and three blocks. Remmetter added eight kills and tied for the team high in digs with 11. Maxwell posted seven kills and 10 digs, while also recording just one receiving error in 24 attempts.

Senior Allie Rutter (Fostoria, Ohio) was perfect on 18 receptions Tuesday and led the squad with 11 digs. Freshman Carleigh Deitsch (St. Henry, Ohio) had 21 assists over three sets, while pitching in with seven digs defensively.

Ohio Dominican will now return to Great Midwest Athletic Conference action with a trip to Alderson Broaddus on Friday, Oct. 11. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. first serve.
