Volleyball takes a set against No. 16 Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich. – Freshman Emilee Fecht (Hilliard, Ohio) logged 14 kills to highlight Ohio Dominican volleyball's performance at nationally ranked Hillsdale Friday evening in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play.

The Panthers, who were facing their third ranked opponent this season, did win their first set against a top 25 squad, but ultimately fell in four frames by a count of 25-17, 25-13, 21-25 and 25-15. With the win, the No. 16 Chargers improve their combined G-MAC regular season and tournament winning streak to 46 matches, while also taking their 35th consecutive match at home.

The 14 kills from Fecht were a career-high in a four-set match and just two off her personal-best mark of 16. On the season, the freshman now has nine appearances with double-digit kills. Fecht finished with a team-best .289 hitting average, five assisted blocks and 16.5 total points.

Freshman Kamryn Maxwell (Norwalk, Ohio) and sophomore Abbi Gillson (Canton, Ohio) combined for 16 kills. Maxwell tallied nine kills to go along with seven digs and three assisted blocks. Two Panthers finished with double-digit assists, with freshman Carleigh Deitsch (St. Henry, Ohio) recording 17 and sophomore Zoë Carmichael (Wooster, Ohio) adding 11 helpers. Senior Allie Rutter (Fostoria, Ohio) registered an ODU-high 28 digs, while sophomore Amanda Remmetter (Springfield, Ohio) pitched in with 11.

The Panthers found success in the third set, holding one of the nation's top offensive hitting teams in the country to a .106 percentage. ODU hit .200 in the third frame and never trailed after opening up a 13-3 lead, a run capped by a service ace from sophomore Emily Amore (Newark, Ohio). Despite a late run by HC, the Black & Gold held on for a 25-21 decision, forcing the match into a fourth set.

The Chargers (17-3, 6-0 G-MAC) closed the first and second sets on 6-2 and 12-2 spurts, respectively. Hillsdale won the opening two frames thanks to a team hitting percentage of .220, while also holding ODU to a mark of .000 during the stretch.

The Panthers (2-20, 2-5 G-MAC) needed to take the fourth set to force a decisive fifth frame, but the Chargers took it 25-15. ODU trailed by just one point early on, but HC scored 10 of the next 12 points to go in front 15-6.

ODU will look to bounce back when they travel to face Findlay at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26.
