Box Score ALLENDALE, Mich. – Ohio Dominican's volleyball team hung with No. 22 Grand Valley State but couldn't pull off the upset as ODU fell 3-1 (14-25, 19-25, 25-18, 19-25) on the road in GLIAC play on Friday night.
Three players had nine kills in senior Tory Thompson (Quincy, Ohio), junior Jackie Oestreich (Brighton, Mich.) and sophomore Ciara Ralston (Findlay, Ohio). Senior Darby Slavin (Columbus, Ohio) had five kills, 30 assists and 17 digs, and freshman Anna Ficker (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied 23 digs.
After falling in the first two sets, the Panthers (7-8, 2-4 GLIAC) played strong in the third frame, recording 15 kills and hitting .224. Leading 11-8, ODU scored seven of the next eight points, capped off by a kill from Ralston, to go in front 18-9, and GVSU never drew closer than five in the remainder of the set.
ODU stayed close in the fourth set, trailing 16-14, but the Lakers (9-5, 5-1 GLIAC) scored four of the next five points to pull away.
The Panthers hit .097 in the match, compared to .224 for the host Lakers. The third set win marked the first time the Panthers have taken a set from Grand Valley in seven meetings.
Ohio Dominican remains on the road to take on No. 4 Ferris State at 3 p.m. Saturday.
