Box Score UNIVERSITY CITY, Mich. -- The Ohio Dominican volleyball team fell in a GLIAC matchup at Saginaw Valley in four sets (25-21, 19-25, 21-25, 13-25 on Saturday afternoon.
The loss ended the Panthers' (5-5, 3-1 GLIAC) win streak at four, as ODU recorded their first conference loss of the season. Saginaw Valley improved to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the GLIAC.
Sophomore Jackie Oestreich (Brighton, MI) recorded nine kills and an attack percentage of .318, her fourth straight match hitting over .300. Junior Tory Thompson (Quincy, OH) tied Oestreich for the lead in kills, charting nine of her own. Junior Kelsey Fortney (Lorain, OH) led the Panthers in assists with 16.
Though the Panthers won the first set, it was the Cardinals that got off to a fast start. Saginaw Valley started the match on a 6-2 run. ODU responded with an 8-1 run, capped off with a kill from Oestreich, to take 10-7 advantage in the opening set. The Black and Gold took their largest lead of the set at 17-10 off an attack error from the Cardinals. The Panthers went on to take the first set, 25-21.
The Panthers got off to another slow start in the second set, as Saginaw Valley took an early 7-2 lead. ODU was able to get it within three points at 12-9 with a kill from Thompson, but could not get any closer as they dropped the second set 25-19.
The third set was tightly contested for the most part, but a 7-0 run from SVSU gave them a 10-5 lead. ODU kept the set tight, but was unable to gain a lead after the run, dropping the third set by a score of 25-21.
In the fourth set, one in which the Panthers needed to win to force a deciding fifth set, SVSU was able to take an early 7-1 lead. ODU did answer with a run of their own as they trailed 8-7 after a kill from freshman Ciara Ralston (Findlay, OH). However, that would be as close as ODU could get as they fell, 25-13.
ODU will return to the friendly confines of Alumni Hall next week as they host three GLIA C opponents. The Panthers will start the week by welcoming Tiffin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23.
