Schwall's Goal Tops Dragons in Thrilling Overtime Win

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team picked up its second conference win of the season with a thrilling 3-2 double overtime over Tiffin on Sunday, Sept. 15 on Panther Field.  It was the first loss of the season for the Dragons.

With the win, the Panthers are now 2-0-1 (2-0 GLIAC) while Tiffin is 3-1-0 (1-1).

The Panthers opened the first half of the game with determination, outshooting the Dragons 11-5, including a goal in the 40th minute after junior Jakob Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) sent a cross into the box from the right side of the field to freshman Jacob Atkinson (Hilliard, Ohio), who then connected to the left corner of the goal.

ODU's defense remained tough, holding the lead into the break.

At the 60:15 mark, Szabo lined up a corner kick to junior Frazer Fernandes (Gahanna, Ohio), who knocked in his first goal of the season.

However, a disciplined and tough Tiffin team came charging back, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1 at the 82:30 mark, when Michael McPeek sent the ball through a team of ODU defenders to Ryan Johnstone who went one-on-one with Panther goal keeper to connect for his first goal of the year.

Just three minutes later, it was Karl Jones turn to give the Dragons momentum, scoring off a Smart Osadolor cross to knot the score 2-2.

For the second half, Tiffin held the advantage in shots, taking 11 while the Panthers managed just three.

Neither team could break the tie in the first overtime, sending the game into the second and final period.

In the 104th minute, a Dragon foul set ODU up for a free kick for senior Billy McGlone (Lexington, Ohio), who found freshman Andrew Schwall (Gahanna, Ohio) to hit home the game-winning goal to the right side of the net.

Sophomore Macklin Robinson (Cincinnati, Ohio) collected his second win of the season to improve to 2-0-1 (2-0 GLIAC). Of the nine shots on goal taken by the Dragons, Robinson stopped seven.

The Panthers hit the road this weekend for their next test. Traveling to Mercyhurst on Wednesday, Sept. 18 and then to Lake Erie on Sunday, Sept. 22.
