Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team made their 5-1 GLIAC Conference Tournament quarterfinal match over Malone a memorable one, as it was the first postseason tournament the university has hosted since joining the conference in 2010.
The Panthers (12-5-1) saw five different players score as they came out hot, scoring early in the ninth minute of the game when sophomore Frazer Fernandes (Gahanna, Ohio) scored his third goal of the season, after junior Duncan Campbell (Hilliard, Ohio) sent a header to senior Justin Wheeler (Gahanna, Ohio) for the touch pass to Fernandes.
With momentum still in full swing, ODU added their second goal when Fernandes won the battle after a loose ball in front of the net, and sent it out to an awaiting sophomore Jakob Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) for the 2-0 lead.
The Black and Gold were not done, as the Panthers added another goal in the first half when Wheeler knocked in his sixth of the year and sending ODU into the locker room with a 3-0 lead.
Following the break, the Pioneers (6-9-1) jumped on the board when Adam Sharpnack was fouled inside the box, setting him and the Pioneers up for a penalty kick. Sharpnack faked left and sent the ball into the back right corner of the net.
At the 72:48 mark, senior Casey Weddle (Cincinnati, Ohio) had his turn in adding a goal to the Panther scoreboard, when he met up with Szabo to give the Panthers a three goal lead.
A little over a minute later, Campbell chipped in his third goal and the final for the Panthers.
ODU outshot the Pioneers 25-13, including 12 shots on goal.
Freshman keeper Macklin Robinson (Cincinnati, Ohio) collected four saves in the net while improving to a 9-3-0 record. Robinson is now ranked first in the conference standings with a save percentage of .822.
With the win, the Panthers advance to the GLIAC Conference Tournament semifinals on Friday, Nov. 2 where they are set to face No. 2 seed Notre Dame. The Panther and Falcons faced off twice in the regular season, splitting a pair of games.
