Panthers Falter in GLIAC Matchup with Lakers

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's offense struggled to get untracked Friday night as the volleyball team fell 3-0 (20-25, 24-26, 16-25) to visiting Grand Valley State in Alumni Hall.

With the setback, ODU fell to 11-13 (4-10 GLIAC), while the Lakers moved to 12-10 (9-6 GLIAC) on the season.

The opening set was tight early, with GVSU holding a slim 13-12 advantage before scoring four straight and grabbing a 17-12 lead. The Panthers drew as near as three points on a pair of occasions, the last at 23-20 after a kill by freshman Brianna Reder (Maineville, Ohio), but the Lakers scored the final two points to win the set.

GVSU carried that momentum into the second frame, jumping to a 7-1 lead. The lead grew to seven on seven occasions, including 20-13, before ODU surged back with a run of its own. Sophomore Tara Winner (Versailles, Ohio) and freshman Lauren Rindler (Rossburg, Ohio) registered kills and senior Stacy Rogg (Cincinnati, Ohio) had two aces as part of a 6-0 Panther run to make it 21-20. GVSU jumped back out in front at 24-21, but sophomore Emily Post (St. Henry, Ohio) and junior Kristy Birkemeier (Columbus Grove, Ohio) tallied kills to help knot the score at 24. The Lakers, though, would score the final two points and claim a 2-0 advantage in the match.

The third set featured six ties in the early-going before a 5-0 Laker run put the visitors on top 11-6. The Panthers drew as near as 11-8, but GVSU quickly extended its lead back out to five points and stayed in front to close out the match.

ODU hit just .050 as a team in the match, finishing with 30 errors to just 36 kills, while the Lakers hit .240 with just 12 errors and 36 kills. Winner tied for a match-high with nine terminations and Reder had seven. A trio of Panthers had at least 10 digs, led by Rogg's match-high 17, along with 10 each from senior Rachel Billing (Anna, Ohio) and freshman Kelsey Snyder (Macomb, Mich.). Snyder led ODU with 15 assists as well for her second double-double of the campaign.

Ohio Dominican remains at home Saturday for a 5 p.m. match with Ferris State in Alumni Hall.
