COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a match featuring numerous long rallies, Ohio Dominican's volleyball team recorded its first home victory of the fall, defeating Alderson-Broaddus (W. Va.) College 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 25-18) Tuesday night in Alumni Hall.
Sophomore Summer Hale (Galena, Ohio) recorded her fourth triple-double of the season with 12 kills, a season-high 33 assists and 19 digs. Freshman Tara Winner (Versailles, Ohio) tallied a season-high 11 kills with a team-best .222 attack percentage, and junior Stacy Rogg (Cincinnati, Ohio) registered 22 digs to help limit the Battlers (7-9) to an .096 hitting percentage.
Behind the serving of senior Heather Kunze (Cincinnati, Ohio), the Panthers (4-7) went on a 5-0 run in the first set to take a 10-6 lead. Alderson-Broaddus rallied to tie the score at 11, but ODU was able to break free and maintain a three-point cushion for most of the set. Leading 18-16, consecutive kills by Winner (pictured), a kill by junior Rachel Billing (Anna, Ohio) and an ace by senior Cassie Vome (Mason, Ohio) bumped ODU's lead to 22-16, and a kill from freshman Emily Post (St. Henry, Ohio) sealed the first set. The Panthers hit .244 with 15 kills in the frame, with Winner (five kills in six attempts) leading the charge.
The Panthers jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set, but Alderson-Broaddus recovered to knot the set at 12. Still tied at 15, Ohio Dominican embarked on a 6-1 run, taking advantage of several Battler errors, and stayed in front by at least four points the remainder of the set. The defense stepped up to hold Alderson-Broaddus to just six kills with eight attack errors in the set for a -.043 hitting percentage.
A sluggish start in the third set, however, prevented the Panthers from a sweep. The Battlers bolted to an 8-1 lead and hardly looked back from there. Post's kill made the score 13-10, and the Panthers would draw within three points on several occasions but get no closer as the team hit just .054 in the set.
The fourth set was a different story, though, with an early 6-1 surge lifting ODU to a 12-6 lead. That advantage never dropped below five points for the remainder of the set. Hale had five of her match-high 12 kills in the set to help carry the Panthers to the victory in their first matchup with Alderson-Broaddus.
Senior setter Elyse Mongillo (Columbiana, Ohio) finished with a double-double with 12 digs and 12 assists, freshman Ashley Sprau (Delaware, Ohio) had nine kills and Billing tallied eight to also lead the Panthers.
Ohio Dominican returns to conference action at 7 p.m. Friday as the Panthers hit the road to take on GLIAC South Division foe Tiffin.
