Hale's Triple-Double Not Enough as Volleyball Falls 3-1

Box Score

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior outside hitter Summer Hale (Galena, Ohio) recorded a triple-double with 15 kills, 17 assists and 15 digs, but Ohio Dominican's volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-20, 27-25, 16-25, 25-18) to visiting Lake Superior State Friday evening in Alumni Hall.

With the setback, ODU fell to 1-1 (0-1 GLIAC), while the Lakers improved to 3-2 (1-0 GLIAC) in the early season.

Hale (pictured) finished with an impressive .351 hitting percentage to lead ODU. Freshman Ashley Sprau (Delaware, Ohio) chipped in with 13 kills and classmate Tara Winner (Versailles, Ohio) added 10 kills to lead the Panthers. Senior setter Elyse Mongillo (Columbiana, Ohio) tallied 30 assists while junior libero Stacy Rogg (Cincinnati, Ohio) had 29 digs to lead five Panthers in double figures in that category.

In the first set, the Panthers led by three points through much of the early-going before a 6-1 run by the Lakers put the visitors in front 13-10. LSSU extended its lead to five at 17-12 when ODU rallied following a timeout, with kills from Sprau and Winner helping narrow the gap to 18-17. The score remained tight at 21-20 when the Lakers scored the final four points in a row to take the first set.

The second set started similarly to the first, with ODU taking an early advantage, only to see Lake Superior State recover and even the score at six. Neither team led by more than a point until LSSU finally scored two straight to make it 24-21, but the Panthers would rally on a kill by junior Rachel Billing (Anna, Ohio) and a pair of Laker attack errors to even the set at 24. Hale's kill gave ODU a brief 25-24 lead, but the Lakers scored the final three straight points to claim the set. There were a total of 17 ties and five lead changes in the set.

The Panthers were finally able to break free in the third set, utilizing a 6-1 spurt to open up a 12-7 lead. That edge increased to 20-10 as Sprau had three kills sandwiched around a Laker error to gain the lead, and ODU coasted to the 25-16 victory.

However, Ohio Dominican couldn't carry that momentum forward as the Lakers jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the fourth set and led the entire way to close out the match.

The Panthers continue their five-match homestand on Saturday, as ODU welcomes GLIAC foe Northwood into Alumni Hall for a 5 p.m. match.
