COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend at the Shawnee State University Tri-Match in Portsmouth, Ohio. The Panthers fell to former conference rival Point Park in five games and Shawnee State in three.
The Panthers let one slip away in the opener as they fell to Point Park, 3-2. ODU is 0-3 on the year in five set matches after dropping their third five set match in five games. The Panthers went up 2-1 early in the match, but couldn't pull it out as they lost game four 25-20 setting up the fifth and final set. In the deciding match the Panthers fell 17-15.
Leading the way for the Panthers was outside hitter Rachel Billing (Jr., Anna, OH) who recorded 19 kills. Summer Hale (Jr., Galena, OH) and Elyse Mongillo (Jr., Columbiana, OH; pictured) combined for 53 assists in the five games and the Panthers recorded 20 blocks in the loss.
In the Panthers second match of the day it was all Shawnee State as they deposed of ODU in straight sets. Ohio Dominican got a superb effort from outside hitter Ashley Hughes (So., Heath, OH) as she finished with 16 kills and a .387 hitting percentage. Billings added 11 kills and 19 digs for the Panthers, but it wasn't enough as they lost to the Bears for the second time this season.
With the losses the Panthers fall to 9-10 on the year and will return to their home floor for the first time in nine games this Tuesday, October 6 as they take on Cedarville University. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
