EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Despite a strong offensive outing Friday afternoon at the Southern Indiana Invitational, the Ohio Dominican volleyball team suffered a 3-2 loss in a thrilling match against Kentucky State.
The Panthers took set Nos. 2 and 4, 25-20 and 25-14, but fell in the remaining three frames by a score of 25-21, 25-20 and 15-4. Friday's match was ODU's first five-setter of the season.
Sophomores Amanda Remmetter (Springfield, Ohio) and Riley Kizer (Mason, Ohio), along with freshman Emilee Fecht (Hilliard, Ohio) paced the Panther offense, combining for 47 of the team's season-high 58 kills. Remmetter fell just short of a personal mark, posting a season-best 24 kills on 57 attacks and a .333 hitting percentage. Kizer logged 12 kills, one off a career mark, eight digs and two blocks over five sets. Fecht registered 11 kills to go along with team-high marks in hitting percentage, .409, service aces, three, and blocks, three.
Sophomore Zoë Carmichael (Wooster, Ohio) finished with three blocks as well. Carmichael, who set a career-high with 43 assists in a match last week, improved her personal single game mark with 52 against the Thorobreds. The sophomore pitched in defensively with 15 digs as well.
After dropping the opening set late by a count of 25-21, ODU responded with a 25-20 decision in the second frame to tie the match. The Panthers, who trailed early in set two, had a stretch of scoring nine of 10 points to capture at 13-8 lead. Kizer and Remmetter each had four kills in the second set, but a kill from Maxwell gave ODU its first frame of the match.
Both sides struggled offensively in the third set, with each side hitting under .100. The Black & Gold led 4-0 and then again at 16-12, but an 8-0 spurt by Kentucky State gave them a 22-17 lead, an advantage they rode to a 25-20 decision.
The Panthers defense helped force KSU into a negative hitting percentage in the fourth frame, a set that never saw ODU trail in. The Panthers had three runs of three consecutive points or more, including to finish the set at 25-14.
After ODU took a 2-1 lead in the fifth and decisive set, the Thorobreds outscored the Panthers 14-2 the rest of the way, securing their sixth win of the season.
Ohio Dominican finished with a .173 team hitting percentage, which is the squad's second highest mark this fall. The Panthers added six total blocks as well, giving them four consecutive matches with at least five rejections.
Play at the Southern Indiana Invitational will conclude Saturday, Sept. 21, when the Panthers take on Shorter at 12:15 p.m. CDT.
