SAINT CHALRES, Mo. – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback to Montevallo in the opening game of the Lindenwood Invitational Friday afternoon, falling by a score of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-21.
The Panthers (0-5) held a lead in all three sets but were unable to close out the Falcons (3-3) in any frames, who have now won three of their past four outings this fall.
Sophomore Amanda Remmetter (Springfield, Ohio) hit .364, as she paced the Panthers with nine kills. Remmetter logged eight digs as well. Freshman Emilee Fecht (Hilliard, Ohio) led the team with 10 points, recording seven kills, two solo blocks and two assisted rejections. Classmate Kamryn Maxwell (Norwalk, Ohio) added six kills and five digs.
Despite a negative hitting percentage in the first set, the Black & Gold led 15-13 after a service ace from Rutter. Rutter's ace capped a 4-0 scoring run for ODU. Montevallo though, responded with eight consecutive points to take advantage in the set before closing with a 25-22 decision.
Another lengthy run by the Falcons gave them an 11-6 edge in the second frame. ODU however, fought back and a Montevallo service error led to a 21-21 tie. The Falcons took advantage of three errors by the Panthers to log four straight points to end the set, 25-21.
ODU led 10-7 in the third set, but never led again after Montevallo tied the frame at 11-all. A kill from sophomore Riley Kizer (Mason, Ohio) pulled the Panthers within one, 22-21, but the Falcons came out of a timeout with the final three points to secure the match.
The Panthers will close out the invite with two matches Saturday, Sept. 14, beginning with a 10 a.m. CDT contest against the host, Lindenwood.
