BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Sophomores Amanda Remmetter (Springfield, OH) and Abbi Gilson (Canton, OH) each logged double digits kills for Ohio Dominican volleyball Friday afternoon, but it was not enough in a 3-0 setback to Seton Hill (Pa.).
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 0-2 on the season, with both losses coming to 2018 NCAA National Tournament qualifiers. Seton Hill (2-0) stayed unbeaten with the 25-20, 25-16, 30-28 neutral-site decision.
ODU improved its team hitting percentage by over 200 points from Thursday night to Friday, led by Remmetter, Gillson and freshman Emilee Fecht (Hilliard, OH), who all hit over .300 against the Griffins. Remmetter led the team with 13 kills, Gillson added 10 and Fecht finished with six. Fecht also led the team with four blocks.
Freshman Madison Smith (Elyria, OH) paced the Panthers with 12 digs, as seven players for ODU recorded at least five in the match. Freshman Carleigh Deitsch (St. Henry, OH) recorded a team-high 21 assists.
ODU conceded two early 3-0 scoring runs to the Griffins, falling behind 6-3 in the first set. The Panthers though, rallied to a one-point deficit, 15-14, as Fecht recorded four first-set kills. However, five consecutive points from Seton Hill followed, which ignited the Griffins to a first set victory, 25-20.
Looking to tie the match at one set each, the Black & Gold were buried into an early hole they could not recover from. The Griffins scored 10 of the set's first 13 points and opened up a lead of 11 points on several occasions before closing with a 25-16 decision.
What would be the final set, the two sides were close throughout, playing the third frame within a six-point window. The Panthers served leading 24-23, with a chance to win the set and move it to a fourth, but a kill by the Griffins would tie the contest at 24-all. The two teams traded points until three consecutive kills by SHU gave them the edge in a 30-28 outcome. Remmetter and Gillson combined for 12 kills in the final set, recording six each.
Ohio Dominican will close out play at the Ferris State Invitational Saturday, Sept. 7, with matches against Bemidji State and Gannon at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
