Volleyball Drops Pair To Start Season

DETROIT, Mich. – Ohio Dominican's volleyball team opened its season with a pair of setbacks, falling in three sets to both Gannon (17-25, 22-25, 11-25) and host Wayne State (19-25, 17-25, 13-25) at the Warrior Invitational on Friday.

In the opener, ODU had chances in the second set to even the match as the Panthers jumped to a 9-3 lead in the frame. The Panthers still led 16-12 after a kill by junior Ciara Ralston (Findlay, Ohio) and an ace from freshman Alexis Young (Gahanna, Ohio), but the Golden Knights scored the next six points to take an 18-16 lead.

ODU tied it at 18-18, but Gannon scored the next four points. The Panthers rallied one more time to even it at 22 on a pair of kills from junior Patricia Barreto (Findlay, Ohio) and an ace from junior Anna Ficker (Cincinnati, Ohio), but GU scored the last three points to take the set, then controlled the third set to win the match.

Barreto led ODU with eight kills and sophomore Bailey Line (Westerville, Ohio) registered 19 assists with nine digs. Ralston added six kills.

Against the Warriors, junior Rebecca Skidmore (Westerville, Ohio) led the Panthers with five kills, while Line tallied 10 assists. Ficker finished with 11 digs as well. ODU limited Wayne State to a .187 hitting percentage but hit -.091 themselves.

The Panthers wrap up play at the Warrior Invitational with a 9 a.m. match against Wisconsin-Parkside and a 3:45 p.m. match with Minnesota State-Mankato.
