TIFFIN, Ohio – Freshman Jackie Oestreich (Brighton, Mich.) and sophomore Lauren Kraemer (Kettering, Ohio) combined for 36 kills and Ohio Dominican's volleyball team went on the road to score a tightly contested 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 29-27, 25-23) win at Tiffin Tuesday night.
The Panthers improved to 7-6 (2-3 GLIAC), while the Dragons dropped to 5-4 (1-4 GLIAC).
Oestreich tallied a season-high 19 kills on 35 swings, finishing with just one error and hitting .514. Kraemer had 17 kills for the second time in three matches, and freshman Taylor Foster (Ida, Mich.) registered 11 as well.
After surrendering a 20-17 lead in the first set, the Panthers came out strong to start the second set, jumping to a 9-2 advantage after consecutive kills by Oestreich. ODU remained in front by at least five points for most of the set until the Dragons drew within 20-19. However, Kramer and Oestreich combined on three kills to help close the frame and knot the match at a set apiece.
The third set was a mini-marathon. After ODU jumped to an 11-6 lead, the Dragons stormed back and would tie the set at 12. The Panthers would fall behind 23-21 and face set point at 24-23, but Oestreich had a kill to tie it. Brianna Reder (Maineville, Ohio) would also tally a kill to keep ODU alive at 25-25, and the Panthers would break free from a 27-27 tie with Reder's kill and a Dragon ball-handling error to claim the set.
For a third straight set, ODU jumped in front early, grabbing a 16-9 advantage in the fourth frame on an ace by Darby Slavin (Columbus, Ohio). Tiffin wouldn't go quietly, though, drawing to within 21-19 and later to 24-23.
Oestreich's 19th and final termination, though, sealed the set and match for ODU.
Freshman Heidi Hess (Dayton, Ohio) registered 29 assists, a season-best, and Slavin added 25 helpers. Megan Hendershot (Galloway, Ohio) finished with 21 digs and senior Bailey Barker (Muncie, Ind.) added 18.
Ohio Dominican takes on No. 18 Grand Valley State at 7 p.m. Friday in Allendale, Mich.
