COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican women's soccer fell to visiting Walsh 1-0 in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference game on Thursday evening inside Panther Stadium.
Despite trailing in shots throughout the first half the Cavaliers broke the deadlock at the half-hour mark capitalizing on a free kick opportunity from outside the box. Some miscommunication in the defensive third from the Panthers led to the ball finding the back of the net allowing Walsh to claim a 1-0 advantage.
ODU attempted to answer nine minutes later when midfielder Emily Wittekind (Cincinnati, Ohio) found the forehead of teammate Ashley Story (Canfield, Ohio) who saw her header temporarily challenge Cavalier keeper Mickey McClanahan, but the senior backstop was able to collect herself to make the save.
The Panthers continued to push forward looking for the game-tying goal. Forward Mari Silvestri (Solon, Ohio) led all Panthers with four shots. Midfielder Taylor Rankin (Dearborn, Michigan) was second on the team with three shots on the evening.
Goalkeeper Cecilia Kuntz (Berlin, Germany) added three saves on the evening. Her best coming in the 69th minute as defender Morgan Reeb (Canal Winchester, Ohio) cleared a ball off the line. Kuntz followed by making two spectacular saves to keep the Cavaliers off the scoresheet.
ODU tried to mount a strong comeback in the dying moments of the game but proved unsuccessful as Walsh held on to claim the 1-0 victory.
The Panthers return to action against Malone on Saturday, October 26th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
