COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Coming off being named co-GLIAC champions, the Ohio Dominican women's soccer team will enter the GLIAC tournament as the number one seed, facing Northern Michigan on Tuesday.
The Panthers finished the GLIAC regular season with a 10-1-1 mark, while holding a 13-3-1 overall record. ODU and Grand Valley State each finished with 31 points in the conference, but since the Panthers defeated the Lakers 1-0 a few weeks ago, ODU was rewarded the top seed in the tournament.
ODU comes into the match riding an eight match winning streak, which ties the school all-time mark. The Panthers have also put together a school record for most victories in a season at the NCAA Division II level at 13.
In the Quarterfinals, ODU will host Northern Michigan. The Panthers and Wildcats faced off once this season, with ODU winning in overtime 3-2, which was the first victory on the current winning streak. In the first meeting, ODU was led by senior Jordan Mazzi (Sunbury, OH) who recorded the opening goal of the match, as well as, the assist on the game winner in overtime. Sophomore Kethryn Mattingly (Beavercreek, OH) tied the match 2-2 on a penalty kick with just under 30 minutes remaining in regulation. Freshman Ashley Blake (Hilliard, OH) scored the game winner just before the end of the first overtime session to give the Panthers the win.
NMU fell behind 1-0, before Carmen Villaruel tied the match before halftime. The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead just as the second started, as Paula Hafner added a goal.
ODU is led on the season by Blake who has seven goals and three assists, totaling 17 points. Her seven goals is tied for 10th best in the GLIAC. Mazzi and junior Lauren Pratt (West Chester, OH) each have 10 or more points this season, with Mazzi having five goals and one assist, while Pratt has recorded four goals and two assists.
Goaltending has been a strong point for the Panthers this season as they have a combined goals against average of 0.68. Senior Laura Clark (Lapeer, MI) has appeared in seven matches now, giving up only one goal. She holds a 4-0-0 record, with a .929 save percentage. Freshman Kelsey Harris (Mason, OH) has a 9-3-1 record with a goals against average of 0.76.
NMU is led by Hafner who has 14 goals on the season, which is the best in the conference. Her 31 points is also tied for the conference lead. Villaruel has six goals and one assist on the season, for a total of 13 points.
The Panthers and Wildcats are scheduled for a 1 p.m. kick-off on Tuesday afternoon. The match will be the first of the GLIAC Quarterfinal matches, with the top four seeds each hosting. A Panther win would mean ODU would host the GLIAC Semi-finals and Championship this weekend on Friday and Sunday.
