URBANA, Ohio – A season-high 27 points from senior Alexa Fisher (Powell, Ohio) and a double-double from classmate Brittleigh Macaulay (Big Prairie, Ohio) powered the Ohio Dominican women's basketball team to an 88-82 triumph at Urbana Tuesday evening.
Fisher, who has now shot 50 percent in all three of her outings this season, added five rebounds, four assists and a career-best three blocks. The senior netted 9-of-18 shots, including five makes from three-point range.
Macaulay's second double-double in three games saw her post 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Fellow starting forward, junior Olivia Fox (Newark, Ohio) pitched in eight points and eight rebounds, while also setting a career high with three blocks.
Sophomore Kennedy Schlabach (Millersburg, Ohio) scored 15 points off the bench, while tying a collegiate best with six assists. The fourth Panther in double figures was junior Angela Troyer (Sugarcreek, Ohio), who used an 8-for-10 effort at the charity stripe to help amass 14 total points. Troyer also set a new season high in rebounds with six.
A 9-0 run midway through the first quarter, capped by a layup from sophomore Alli Kern (Waterford, Ohio), gave ODU a 16-5 lead. The Black & Gold led by double digits for most of the first quarter and a trey from Troyer at the buzzer gave them a 28-17 advantage after 10 minutes of play. ODU built its first quarter lead on 11-of-20 shooting (.550).
The Panthers' lead was extended to as many as 18 points in the second quarter, as one of three Schlabach three-pointers made the score 37-19. However, over the final eight minutes of the half, Urbana used a 28-7 scoring run, including a layup in the closing seconds, to take a 45-44 lead into the break. The Blue Knights made 11 of their final 17 shots in the half to capture their first lead of the contest.
Urbana carried its momentum into the third quarter, leading by as many as 11 points, 61-50, with just over 15 minutes remaining in the contest. However, ODU rallied late in the period and a three-pointer from Fisher at the third-quarter buzzer tied the game at 65-all.
With just under seven minutes to play, the Panthers found themselves in a five-point hole, 75-70. ODU though, held Urbana scoreless for four minutes and scored 12 unanswered points to capture an 82-75 lead with 2:53 left to play, the team's first advantage since the closing seconds of the first half.
A jumper from Fisher, along with two free throws from the senior and Troyer helped the Black & Gold hold off a late surge from the Blue Knights in the 88-82 final decision.
Both sides made over 30 field goal attempts, with Urbana holding a slight edge in field goal percentage at .458-.425. Ohio Dominican made 10 treys for the first time this season and finished with a 45-39 advantage in rebounds. ODU's bench also outscored Urbana's 24-7.
The Panthers will now host No. 22/20 Glenville State in their home opener on Thursday, Nov. 21. ODU's third consecutive game against an opponent from the Mountain East Conference is set for a 6 p.m. tip inside Alumni Hall.
