NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A first half hat trick from junior Jaxson Szabo (Worthington, Ohio) led Ohio Dominican's men's soccer team to a 3-2 win at Trevecca Nazarene Saturday afternoon in Nashville.
Szabo has five goals in his last two games for the Panthers to pace the offense.
With the win, head coach Willy Merrick has earned his 100th career win as the head coach of the Panther men's soccer team.
Szabo was able to strike right away for the Panther offense converting on a breakaway shot just 42 seconds into the game to put ODU up 1-0 early as Cameron Christian (Pataskala, Ohio) found Szabo straking through the middle. Directly at the four minute mark, a foul on the Trojan goalkeeper sent Szabo to the spot for a penalty kick which he converted just past Will Thompson in the lower right corner. Thompson got a hand on the shot but was unable to keep the shot out of the back of the net.
Just before the half, in the 38th minute, Carter Patchett (Dublin, Ohio) found Szabo who was able to convert on his hat trick scoring on another breakaway to put ODU up 3-0 through the first 45 minutes.
A Panther red card in the 40th minute left the ODU team with just 10 players on the field for the remainder of the contest.
Trevecca was able to score two second half goals, the first in the 66th minute and the second in the 72nd. The Trojans had attempts to tie the game up having a shot come off the cross bar late in the contest.
Junior goalkeeper Ian Crook (Cincinnati, Ohio) faced eight shots on goal out of 25 total from the Trojans making six saves in the 90 minutes between the posts.
The Panthers will be back in action next Thursday, October 3 as they welcome Alderson Broaddus to Columbus with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
