COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team continues conference play after defeating GLIAC foe, Findlay last Sunday.
The Panthers split their two games last week, falling to Tiffin, 3-0 before winning at home on Sunday against Findlay, 2-1. ODU was held without a goal for the first time this season in its loss to Tiffin. The first goal was scored in the 20th minute as Landell beat junior Justin Alexander (Reynoldsburg, OH) one on one off a ball over the top and into the box. Junior Brent Wahle (Pataskala, OH) had two opportunities to score with one shot being saved and the other sailing wide right. The Panthers missed another opportunity in the 54th minute when senior Jakob Szabo's (Worthington, OH) penalty kick was saved by the goalkeeper. The Dragons added its last goal in the 66th minute to seal the 3-0 victory.
Against Findlay, two sophomores, Jacob Atkinson (Hilliard, OH) and Michael Fragoulis (Chios, Greece), each scored the Panthers only goals in the first five minutes of the match. Atkinson scored in the second minute with help from Wahle to beat the keeper in the bottom right corner. Fragoulis added the second goal at the 3:06 mark.
The Panthers (4-2 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) return to action on Friday, September 26 at home against Walsh (3-2, 1-2 GLIAC) at 7:00 p.m. and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September, 28 against Malone (1-4 overall, 0-3 GLIAC).
Sophomore Justin Bonchek (Mayfield, OH) currently ranks first in the GLIAC with three assists and tied for 32nd nationally. While sophomore Tanner Ebright (Pickerington, OH) is tied for second with two. Alexander continues his strong season and is second among all goalkeepers in the GLIAC with 27 saves. His save total is also ranked tied for 28th at the NCAA Division II level. Szabo ranks third in the conference in goals with three and fourth in points with six.
Walsh (Friday, September 26)
Ohio Dominican will host the Walsh Cavaliers on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Panther Stadium. The Panthers overall record against the Cavaliers is 12-17-1. ODU is 4-0-1 in its last five matches against Walsh. Last season, Ohio Dominican won 2-1 at home in its first meeting with Walsh before tying them 2-2 in the regular season finale.
After winning its first three, Walsh enters the match with a two game losing streak. The Panthers are entering the match ranked fourth in the GLIAC with the Cavaliers right behind them at fifth. Walsh is led by senior Sam Mountstephens, who leads the conference in points with fourteen and goals with seven.
Malone (Sunday, September 28)
The Panthers finish the week when they welcome conference rival Malone to Panther Stadium on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The Pioneers are currently on a four game losing streak and hopes to get back on track against ODU as they currently rank eighth in the GLIAC. Malone owns the series record at 12-14-2. ODU has won four straight against the Pioneers including a season sweep in 2013 with scores of 3-2 and 2-1.
Junior goalkeeper Jon Crabbs enters the week with the most saves in the conference with 30 and will be a key player if Malone hopes to slow down the Panther offense.
