LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – The Ohio Dominican men's soccer team used a strong second half and overtime session to defeat Bellarmine 3-2.
With the win the Panthers, who are ranked 19th nationally, improve to 2-0-0, while the Knights fall to 1-1-0.
ODU and the Knights played to a scoreless first half which saw Bellarmine have the advantage in shots at 7-3. The Knights were able to get four of their shot shots on goal, but junior Justin Alexander (Reynoldsburg, OH) managed to save them all.
The Knights took the first lead of the game at 1-0 when Dan Schiavi scored just 14 seconds into the second half.
The Panthers were able to respond as they scored two unanswered goals in 18 minutes to take the lead 2-1 with 26:26 remaining. Junior Brent Wahle (Pataskala, OH) scored his second goal of the season on a header played in from sophomore Justin Bonchek (Mayfield, OH). The second goal was scored by junior Caleb Wilson (Reynoldsburg, OH) on a header played in from Bonchek.
As the end of regulation neared, the Knights were able to tie the game at 2-2, with 10:06 remaining, on a goal from Kai Qualah.
In the overtime session, it did not take the Panthers long to score as senior Jakob Szabo (Worthington, OH) scored on a penalty kick 1:28 into overtime.
ODU finished the game with 14 total shots, with seven on goal. Szabo led the team in shots with four, while Wahle recorded three. Bonchek recorded the assist on the first two goals adding to his total of three in two games.
The Panthers will be on the road again for their next contest at Lake Erie. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 12. ODU will have their first home match on Sunday, September 14 against nationally ranked Mercyhurst.
