MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- For the first time in nearly five years, the Ohio Dominican men's golf team won a team tournament championship, as the Panthers took first place at the Mount Vernon Nazarene Fall Invitational Saturday, Oct. 5.
The Panthers registered a scoring round of 303 in the morning session before concluding the one-day, 36-hole event with a team total of 295 in the afternoon, finishing the day with 598 strokes. The second round score marked the fourth time this fall the Black & Gold have shot under 300, while the overall score is their second performance under 600 in 2019.
All 11 golfers made the trip for ODU, with five Panthers recording top 10 finishes. All five golfers on ODU's "A" team, that took first place, shot 78 or better in both rounds and placed inside the top 16 in the field of 65. Leading the way was sophomore Robert Holden (Hertfordshire, England), who logged rounds of 75 and 72 for a score of 147. Holden used four of his seven tournament birdies to jump four spots in the second round to place third overall.
Senior Blake Saffell (Somerset, Ohio) placed in a tie for fourth with a tournament total of 149 (74-75). The "B" squad had two golfers tie for sixth in junior Jonathon Dill (Sedalia, Ohio) and sophomore Andrew Berger (Pataskala, Ohio), with both shooting 150. Dill shot 78 in the first round before posting four birdies in the afternoon to tie Holden for the team's lowest round of the tournament with a 72. Berger added five birdies on the day, posting rounds of 74 and 76.
Rounding out the top 10 scoring for ODU was sophomore Ben Herman (Germantown, Ohio). Herman paced the Panthers with eight birdies, four in each round, as he tied for eighth with a score of 151 (77-74).
Adding top 20 finishes were freshman Jacob Brownley (West Chester, Ohio) and sophomore Dalton Crowley (Nashport, Ohio). The duo recorded scores of 152 (78-74) and 155 (77-78), placing 12th and 16th respectively.
Ohio Dominican's team championship the program's first victory since the 2013-14 season, which saw the Black & Gold top the leaderboards on three different occassions. The host Cougars placed second with a total of 605, while Saint Mary-of-the-Woods rounded out the top three at 617. ODU's second squad placed fourth in the field of nine teams with a score of 619 (312-307).
The Panthers will now look to carry the momentum into their next outing, a two-day event at the Cedarville Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 14 and 15.
