Varence's Career High Sends Men's Basketball to Win over Kentucky St.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Hasan Varence's (Queens, New York) career high 33 points led Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team to a 92-73 win over Kentucky St. in non-conference action Tuesday evening in Alumni Hall.

Varence scored 24 of his 33 points in the second half and also finished with seven rebounds and two assists on the evening while fellow senior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Michael Scott (Hebron, Ky.) tallied 15 points, 12 in the first half, along with a team high four steals in the contest. Sophomore Arius Jones (Lansing, Mich.) stuffed the stat sheet matching his career-high with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists on the evening.

The Panthers opened the first half gaining an eight point edge on the Thorobreds at 22-14 at the second media timeout with Varence capping the run with his first three of a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc. Out of the media timeout, Kentucky St. would go on a 10-0 run to take their only lead at 24-22 with 7:25 remaining in the half.

ODU would regain momentum gaining a nine point edge at 37-28 on a pair of Jones free throws with 3:17 remaining and would get the lead to 10 at 41-31 before a KSU three before the buzzer sent the teams to the locker rooms with ODU leading 41-34 at the half.

 Varence and the Panthers blitzed the Thorobreds to start the second half with the senior forward scoring the first 11 points for the Panthers out of the break. ODU opened the half on a 21-8 run to gain a 19-point lead at 61-42 with 14:11 remaining.

The Panthers would get their lead up to 24 at 70-46 on a Varence layup with 10:57 to go and a 10-0 run by KSU over the next two minutes cut their deficit down to 14. The Panthers would see their largest lead of the game at 92-67 with 1:56 to go and KSU would finish the contest with a 6-0 run.

ODU finished the contest forcing a season-high 18 turnovers in the contest with 16 points off the turnovers. The Panthers ended the contest shooting 51% (33-for-65) including 56% in the second half (19-for-34) and 46% from behind the arc with a season-high 12 threes made (26 attempts). ODU's defense held the Thorobreds to 42% shooting (27-for-65) and 36% (9-for-25) from behind the arc.

With the win, ODU evens their record at 2-2 and will head to the Don Callan Classic hosted by Cedarville to play Indianapolis on Friday and Grand Valley St. on Saturday. Tip for the contest with UIndy is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Callan Athletic Center.
