INDIANAPOLIS – Juniors Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) and Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) of Ohio Dominican's men's basketball each earned First Team All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference honors as announced by the conference office Thursday night.
Varence and Hickey each joined the 1,000 points club earlier this season in a win over Trevecca Nazarene. The pair were the first juniors since 2004 to reach 1,000 points in their first three seasons and enter their final year with 1,192 and 1,185 points, respectively.
Varence led the G-MAC in double-doubles with 14 where he also led the country in rebounds per game at 12.8 per contest. The junior forward was second on the team averaging 16.2 points per game where he shot 52.6% from the floor and in conference play, Varence averaged 17.5 points per game on 54.1% shooting while grabbing 13.6 rebounds. The Queens, New York native set the G-MAC and ODU record with 25 rebounds in a game at Davis & Elkins and his 312 total rebounds on the season puts him third in school history for rebounds in a season.
Hickey posted a pair of double-doubles to finish the season as he finished the year leading the team in scoring at 16.9 points per game where he also led the conference in three point field goals made per game with three. The Toledo, Ohio native set the ODU school record with 10 threes in a game against Davis & Elkins as he played a key role in the team making a school record 19 that game. His 85 three pointers ties him for fourth on the ODU list for three pointers in a season while his 223 attempts from behind the arc is second in ODU history.
Varence, Hickey and the rest of the men's basketball team saw their season come to an end with a loss to Cedarville in the G-MAC Quarterfinal as they finished the season with a 17-11 record.
