INSTITUTE, W. Va. – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team dropped a nail-biter in a nonconference contest with West Virginia State by a final score of 82-80 Wednesday evening at the Walker Convocation Center in Institute, West Virginia.
Leading the way for the Panthers was junior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) who matched his career-high with 31 points on 10-for-22 shooting and 6-of-13 from distance. Senior Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) set a career-high with 20 points on 7-for-8 shooting and 6-for-7 from distance while also tying his career-high with six assists.
Junior Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) notched his third straight double-double scoring 15 points while grabbing 19 rebounds and sophomore Michael Scott (Hebron, Kentucky) set a new career-high with nine assists in the contest.
The first half saw the Panthers trailing early by a score of 6-4 before a 16-3 Panther run, led by eight points by Hoyng, gave them an 11-point lead at 20-9 with 12:35 remaining in the half.
The Yellow Jackets would then go on a 19-8 run themselves over the next 5:03 to knot the game at 28 apiece with 6:43 remaining.
ODU would regain the lead at 33-28 before WVSU would go on a 15-4 run to close the half and send the teams to the locker room with ODU trailing 43-37.
The Panthers shot 14-for-36 (38.9%) from the floor in the half while WVSU was 16-for-33 (48.5%).
Within the first two minutes of the second half, ODU would go on a 7-1 run to tie the game back up at 44.
The teams would go back-and-forth over the next 5:14 as they would be tied five times up to 55 apiece with 12:52 remaining in regulation.
WVSU would then go on a 15-4 run to give them an 11-point lead at 70-59 with 8:37 remaining in regulation.
With the score 75-67, Varence began to take the game over scoring eight straight points for the Panthers and that followed with three point baskets from Hoyng and Hickey which tied the game at 80-80 with 2:23 remaining.
A pair of free throws from Pat Johnson-Agwu with 1:54 remaining gave the Jackets a two point lead that they would not surrender. Varence got a look just outside the paint at the buzzer but fell no good.
Leading the way for the Jackets was Jeremiah Moore off the bench scoring 21 points while Agwu had 20. Ernest Jenkins and Gus Stone each had 11 to round out the double-figure scorers for WVSU.
The Panthers shot 44% from the floor (29-for-66) and 52% from distance (12-for-23) while WVSU shot 45% (29-for-64) and 45% (9-for-20) from distance.
ODU drops to 8-4 overall while WVSU advances to 5-6 overall.
ODU gets back into conference play this Saturday as they host Ohio Valley with tip set for 3 p.m.
