COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team will face a three-game, Great Midwest test in five days, as the Panthers prepare to host Walsh on Tuesday before traveling to Trevecca and Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday and Saturday.
ODU (10-9, 5-7 G-MAC) has won three of its last four G-MAC games and is seeking to make a push for the conference tournament with just eight games remaining in the regular season. Five of Ohio Dominican's final eight conference contests will be played in Alumni Hall, including the final four games of the regular season.
The Panthers rank first in the Great Midwest in assists per game (17.3 apg) and three-point field goal percentage (37.8 percent). ODU also comes in at third in the conference in scoring (78.6 ppg), field goal percentage (48.2 percent), field goal percentage defense (41.5 percent) and three-point field goal percentage defense (31.5 percent).
Sophomore Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) leads the way for the squad in scoring and rebounding. Varence averages 13.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game on 50.7 percent shooting from the field. Sophomore Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) hit seven three-pointers in the win over Ohio Valley and is averaging 12.3 points per contest. Hickey moved into 11th all-time in program history in three-pointers made in the 88-62 win over OVU and boasts 123 triples in just 45 games as a Panther.
Seniors Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) and Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) are also averaging double figures in scoring for ODU. Williams is scoring 11.9 points per game on 47.5 percent shooting from the field, while Waugh scores 11.2 points and dishes out a team-high 4.2 assists per game. Waugh boasts an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.41, good enough to rank second in the G-MAC and seventh in NCAA Division II.
Tuesday's game against Walsh will mark the first meeting between the Panthers and Cavaliers this season. ODU will be facing Trevecca and Kentucky Wesleyan for the second time this season. ODU fell 68-57 to KWC on December 7, 2017 before scoring a 76-54 victory over TNU on December 9.
