No. 7 – Men's Basketball Stuns Urbana in OT Thriller
First year men's basketball coach Dan Evans had a debut to remember.
In one of the most thrilling conclusions in Alumni Hall's history, senior Brandon Carr drilled a game-tying three-pointer as time expired in regulation, and Ohio Dominican completed the comeback in overtime against Urbana with a 93-91 season-opening win on Nov. 12.
The game was tightly contested throughout, with neither team leading by more than six points in the duration. The Panthers trailed 44-40 at the break, took several leads in the second half, but found itself down 79-74 with less than a minute to play after a mini 5-0 run by the Blue Knights.
Mark Minch tipped in his own miss with 36 seconds left to cut it to 79-76, but Urbana answered with two free throws on the other end to take a 81-76 lead with 36 ticks left. Minch made another layup, but two more free throws kept Urbana on top by five with just 18 seconds remaining.
Minch drilled a three-pointer to make it 83-81 with 11 seconds left, and after Urbana split two free throws, ODU called timeout and Carr knocked down the three to knot the game at 84.
The Panthers scored the first four points in overtime but couldn't pull away completely from the Blue Knights. Holding a 93-91 lead, sophomore Trent Weaver blocked a layup attempt by Urbana with the clock running down, and ODU secured the rebound and the win.
Minch scored a career-high 31 points with 10 rebounds and Weaver had 23 points and 14 rebounds to also lead ODU to the win.
