COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team suffered an 85-59 loss to the hands of visiting Walsh Thursday evening in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match in Alumni Hall.
The Panthers (5-17; 3-15 GLIAC) managed to stay within striking distance in the first half and trailed at the break by the score of 42-31.
The Panthers fell behind 26-14 with 8:39 to play, but a basket by sophomore Mark Minch (West Chester, Ohio) cut the lead to 26-17. Another basket by Minch cut it to 26-19 with 7:27 remaining.
Walsh extended its lead 33-19 with 6:15 to play but a pair of free throws by freshman Melran Leach (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and a basket by sophomore Trent Weaver (Columbus, Ohio) cut the lead down to 10, 33-23. A deep three by freshman Reece Dils (Saline, Mich.) put the Panthers within eight, 34-26 with less than four minutes remaining in the opening frame.
Walsh quickly put distance between them and the Panthers, using a 6-0 run to go up by 14 with 1:52 to play.
ODU would chip away at the Cavaliers lead in the final minute of the half, heading into halftime trailing by eleven.
The Panthers shot 40.7 percent from the field on 11-of-27 shooting while the Cavaliers shot 53.6 percent on 15-of-28 shooting clip.
After the break, Walsh kept its up-tempo offense, going ahead by as much as 20, 61-41 with 11:25 remaining in the second half. The Cavaliers went on a 19-2 run over the next six minutes to take a commanding 37 point lead with 5:33 remaining.
The Panthers got as close as 85-59, but could not overcome the large deficit.
Sophomore Trent Weaver (Columbus, Ohio), Minch and Dils, led the Panthers with 10 points.
Ohio Dominican will resume play on Saturday, Feb. 15 with a 3 p.m. game against Malone.
