INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) have jointly announced a new football scheduling agreement for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
The G-MAC and GLVC, existing partners in the formation of the America's Crossroads Bowl game, have now linked together for crossover competition in weeks three and four each year. The G-MAC will travel to a GLVC opponent in week three of 2021, and will host a GLVC opponent in Week four.
In 2022, the GLVC will travel to a G-MAC opponent in Week three and will host in Week four.
The structure will provide institutions a guaranteed slate of nine Division II competitions in each year. It will also allow for weeks one and two in each year to remain open for additional regional or national competition.
"The alliance we are forming with the GLVC is a resourceful step to ensure the needs of all 16 football programs from the respective leagues are met over these next several years," stated Great Midwest commissioner Tom Daeger. "It is important that we are providing this opportunity for all eight G-MAC football teams and I am thankful to our membership for supporting this scheduling initiative."
"The partnership, coupled with the current seven-game league schedule, will offer a strong base of nine in-region Division II contests for our member institutions, ensuring a key component of positioning our programs for NCAA Tournament access," he added. "We are also adding the autonomy for our institutions to complete their scheduling in the first two weeks of the seasons to suit their institutional scheduling objectives. I believe this partnership to be a win for both leagues and I have enjoyed collaborating with Commissioner (Jim) Naumovich and the GLVC football-playing institutions on this alliance."
The allotment of nine Division II contests in the agreement allows the institutions to meet NCAA tournament selection criteria required for minimum DII opponent numbers. It will also provide institutions autonomy in determining the number of additional overall contests scheduled in each year to meet the objectives of their respective programs.
Previous agreements in week three for select GLVC members were honored during the scheduling process.
"This collaborative effort between the GLVC and G-MAC will benefit 16 football programs and goes a long way in addressing non-conference scheduling challenges for our schools," said GLVC commissioner Jim Naumovich. "I am grateful to Commissioner (Tom) Daeger for his efforts and the great cooperation that resulted in this important football scheduling alliance."
The Great Midwest is a member of Super Region 1 and the GLVC is part of Super Region 3 for NCAA Championship qualification.
The inaugural America's Crossroads Bowl between the two conferences will be conducted this year in Hobart, Ind., at Brickyard Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 7.
