INDIANAPOLIS –After a record-setting performance during a 56-10 Ohio Dominican football win at Alderson Broaddus, senior Alessio Amato (Zanesville, Ohio) has been named Great Midwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Amato is receiving his first career weekly conference award, as he helped the Panther defense tie or set a season-low in points (10) and yards (332) allowed. The senior also tied a single game program record with three interceptions.
The senior's three-pick day tied the conference single game mark as well, while his 98 return yards set a new G-MAC record. Amato picked off two first half passes against the Battlers, both of which led to offensive touchdowns for the Black & Gold. He returned his third interception for a 44-yard touchdown with 8:11 remaining in the third quarter. His pick-six was just the 10th in program history.
To go along with his pass coverage, Amato recorded seven total tackles and two tackles for loss. His tackle total tied a career high, giving him three career games with seven stops, all of which have come this fall. Amato's 2.0 TFL's also set a new personal best.
The senior is averaging 6.4 tackles per game this season, with four interceptions, four pass break ups and 3.5 tackles for loss. Amato's interception total and 0.8 picks per game both rank third in Division II this fall. With nine career interceptions, Amato is now in a four-way tie for third all-time at ODU.
With Amato's honor, the Panthers have now won four awards this season, which is tied with Tiffin for the most in the G-MAC through the first five weeks. ODU has two defense and two special teams awards in 2019.
The Panthers now enter the first of two scheduled bye weeks during the season and will resume competition at 1 p.m. CDT, Saturday, Oct. 19, at Kentucky Wesleyan.
