BAY CITY, Mich. – Junior defensive back Billy Eakins (Pickerington, Ohio) earned his second career GLIAC Football Defensive Player of the Week award for his efforts in Ohio Dominican's 26-8 win over Walsh on Saturday.
Eakins finished with five tackles, an interception and two pass break ups to help the defense limit Walsh to just 212 total yards. The Cavaliers entered Saturday's matchup averaging 440 yards and 32.7 points per game.
Eakins' interception came in the fourth quarter after Walsh cut the Panther lead to 19-8 and recovered an onside kick. He picked off a pass deep in the ODU end zone to stop the scoring threat, and five plays later the Panthers scored a touchdown to put the game away.
It was his eighth career interception, which is one shy of tying the school record.
Eakins also earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after intercepting two passes in a win over Northern Michigan in September, 2012.
Ohio Dominican hits the road to take on Lake Erie at 1 p.m. Saturday.
