COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior defensive back Justin Bell (Columbus, Ohio) hauled in more laurels on Thursday, being named a Second Team All-American by D2Football.com.
This is the sixth All-American honor for ODU's all-time leading tackler, as Bell was also selected to the AFCA, AP, BSN, Daktronics and Don Hansen All-American teams following the season.
Bell, who was also named OhioCollegeFootball.com's Co-Defensive Player of the Year, the GLIAC Defensive Back of the Year and First Team All-GLIAC, led ODU with 101 tackles in 2013. He made 11 or more tackles in six games, including a season-best 14 stops against West Texas A&M. Bell forced two fumbles and intercepted two passes this season while breaking up four others.
Also a threat in the return game, Bell returned 24 punts for an average of 14.4 yards per return and tied a GLIAC-record with a 91-yard return for a touchdown against Grand Valley, earning GLIAC Player of the Week honors.
He capped his career with a school-record 294 career tackles and a school-record seven fumbles forced. He tied a school-record with nine career interceptions and is tied for second with six fumble recoveries. Bell's career 14.2 punt return average is also a school-record.
Bell was also selected to the Daktronics Super Region Four First Team and to Don Hansen's First Team All-Region following the season. In 2012, he was a First Team All-GLIAC pick and earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors in 2011.
