BAY CITY, Mich. – Ohio Dominican's football team picked up four first-place votes and was projected to finish second overall in the GLIAC South Division, according to the preseason coaches' poll released today.
The Panthers finished with a total of 80 points, just eight points shy of first-place Ashland, and were 11 points in front of third-place Findlay.
Walsh, Lake Erie, Tiffin and Malone rounded out the rankings for the South Division.
ODU squares off against each South Division foe and also has North Division crossover games with Grand Valley, which was picked to win the North, Hillsdale (fifth) and Northern Michigan (seventh).
Last season, the Panthers finished in a second place tie in the overall GLIAC standings, finishing with a 7-3 conference mark and an 8-3 record overall.
ODU returns 47 letterwinners and 22 players who started at least one game from 2012. The Panthers finished the season ranked 12th nationally in scoring offense (40.8 points per game), 13th in rushing offense (244.9 yards per game), 27th in total offense (452.8 yards per game) and total defense (333.9 yards per game) and fifth in sacks allowed (six).
Last week, the Panthers picked up votes in the AFCA Coaches' Poll for the first time since joining the Division II ranks.
Ohio Dominican kicks off the 2013 season at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5 at Georgetown (Ky.) College.
