COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team travels to Evansville, Ind. and will take on a trio of regional opponents this weekend at the Dunn Hospitality Classic.
The Panthers, ranked No. 23 in this week's NCBWA poll, take on host and No. 15 Southern Indiana at noon Friday before playing Truman State at 3:30. ODU and Grand Valley State will then matchup at 11 a.m. Sunday.
ODU started the season with a pair of victories against Urbana on Feb. 14, defeating the Blue Knights by scores of 9-0 and 13-2. The Panthers needed just 15 hits to score the 22 runs as ODU drew 18 walks for the doubleheader, registering a .500 OBP on the day.
Panther pitchers, meanwhile, allowed just five hits – all singles – and two unearned runs, striking out 22 and issuing just four walks in 14 innings of work.
Seniors Mitchell Bault (Maineville, Ohio) and Genesis Hillard (Cincinnati, Ohio) were recognized as the G-MAC Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. Bault matched a personal-high with 11 punchouts in 5.1 scoreless innings, while Hillard went 2-for-3 in both games, scoring five runs and knocking in four.
Senior catcher Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) and sophomore second baseman Tim Zeller (Mount Vernon, Ohio) finished with three hits apiece, while Kaucher and senior Noah Bland (Oberlin, Ohio) each swiped three bases. Hillard, Kaucher and freshman Manny Vorhees (Wapakoneta, Ohio) also drew three walks each.
Senior southpaw Garret Sendelbach (Tiffin, Ohio) started the back end of the twinbill and picked up the win after scattering three hits in 6.0 innings, striking out five.
This will be the second meeting between ODU and USI in the Panthers' Division II era. ODU fell to USI 9-7 in last year's Midwest Regional championship round in Springfield, Ill.
The Panthers have not faced Truman State in its Division II era, while ODU and Grand Valley have tangled 27 times. ODU has a 6-3-1 record against the Lakers in the last 10 contests.
