MASON, Ohio – Two stellar performances on the mound and patience at the plate carried Ohio Dominican's baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Urbana by scores of 9-0 and 13-2 on Thursday at Prasco Park in Mason.
In the season opener, senior Mitchell Bault (Maineville, Ohio) matched a career-high as he struck out 11 batters in 5.1 innings of work, allowing just two singles with no walks. He threw 59 of his 89 pitches for strikes, punched out the side in the first and third innings, and just one runner reached second base against him.
In the nightcap, senior Garret Sendelbach (Tiffin, Ohio) was just as sharp. In 6.0 innings, he allowed just three hits and two unearned runs while striking out five. Sendelbach needed just 67 pitches in his outing, throwing 42 of them for strikes.
Offensively, the Panthers had just 15 hits, but drew a whopping 20 walks and were also hit by two pitches. Senior Genesis Hillard (Cincinnati, Ohio) went 4-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, three walks and four RBIs, scoring five runs. Senior Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) finished 3-for-5 with three walks and three RBIs, while junior Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio) and sophomore Tim Zeller (Mount Vernon, Ohio) each drove in four runs.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the second inning, Machuga tripled into the gap in right-center to clear the bases and extend the lead to 5-0, and Zeller's sacrifice fly in the third inning bumped the cushion to 6-0.
After a scoreless fourth frame, Zeller delivered a two-run single in the fifth, and Hull's sac fly in the sixth capped the game's scoring.
In game two, the Panthers finished with seven hits, but drew 12 walks en route to their 13 run performance. The dozen free passes are the most in a game for ODU since they also drew 12 against Clarion on March 10, 2018.
ODU again played from in front from the first frame on as Machuga had an RBI single in the first inning and Kaucher stole home to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers tacked on another run in the second inning, but Urbana took an advantage of an ODU error to score twice in the fourth and close to within 3-2.
However, it was all ODU the rest of the way. A five-run burst in the bottom half broke the game open, started with Hillard's two-run double and followed by a two-run basehit by senior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio).
Kaucher's sac fly in the fifth made it a 9-2 game, and the Panthers poured on four more runs in the sixth. Zeller had an RBI single, Hillard a two-run triple to left center, and Kaucher an RBI basehit to close out the scoring.
Ohio Dominican will be off this weekend and return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 at Southern Indiana.
