Walsh Defeats Panthers With Fourth Quarter Rally

NORTH CANTON, Ohio -  Riding a two-game winning streak, the Ohio Dominican Panthers (2-1, 1-1 G-MAC) football team traveled to face another undefeated team on Saturday (Sept. 27) - the Walsh Cavaliers (4-0, 2-0) at Larry Staudt Field. 

The Panthers squandered a 7-0 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, falling to Walsh 14-7. 

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Drew Gallehue completed 20 of his 29 passes for 209 yards passing. Gallehue had one touchdown pass and finished with one interception.   
  • Markquan Rucker carried the ball 11 times for a total of 38 yards. 
  • Brayden Sanders led the team in catches and yards with seven receptions for 98 yards. 
  • Jayden Cornell caught five passes for 47 yards while Joshua Moore scored the lone touchdown with a 33-yard catch. Cornell added 50 yards on punt returns in the game for 97 all-purpose yards.
  • Bryce Washington led all players with a career-high 13 tackles, including nine solo stops. Jace Schaefer followed with his career-best of ten tackles while also having two sacks and three tackles for loss. 
  • Mo Conteh made eight tackles in the game from the secondary. 
  • Quentin Wagers notched two more sacks in the game, including a strip sack - to give him five sacks in three games thus far. 
  • Romearo Wells got his first interception of the season - the fifth of the 2025 season for the Panthers. He later blocked a field goal attempt in the 4th quarter. 
  • ODU lost the total offense category 261-257 and had the ball for 28 minutes in the game. 
  • The Panther defense combined for four sacks on the day. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first quarter was a defensive battle with six combined punts as the game was scoreless until the second quarter. 
  • The Panthers got into the red zone on their first possession of the second quarter but a 26-yard field goal try by Henry Vakerics was no good. 
  • ODU's next drive got them into the end zone as Gallehue connected with Moore on a 33-yard pass to the back of the end zone. The Panthers led 7-0 with 3:27 left before halftime. 
  • Walsh's next drive ended at the one-yard line as Wells snagged an interception at the goal line to keep the game 7-0 at halftime. 
  • More defense occured in the third quarter as there were five punts and each team was denied on a fourth and short attempt. 
  • Two plays into the fourth quarter, Jake Gill made it 7-7 with a 14-yard touchdown run. 
  • A surprise onside kick got the Cavaliers the ball back and the Panthers special teams unit turned away. On a 33-yard try, Wells got through and blocked the try, keeping the game tied at seven. 
  • Late in the fourth quarter, a QB keeper run by Cole Norris lifted the Cavs to a 14-7 lead with 4:40 left. 
  • ODU tried to tie the game but an interception ended the comeback inside the Walsh ten-yard line.

  • Homecoming is next on the calendar for the Panthers as they will host the Northwood Timberwolves next Saturday (Oct. 4) at 12:00 PM.
