Panthers Set Single Game Sack Record in Shutout Win over Lake Erie

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Dominican football team celebrated its annual Senior Day with a 31-0 shutout victory over Lake Erie on Saturday afternoon. 

The Panthers, who improved to 7-3 overall (4-2 G-MAC), secured their 13th home winning season in 18 years as a program. Ohio Dominican's win also gives the program its eight consecutive fall season with seven-plus victories.  

BOX SCORE NOTES 

  • Ohio Dominican broke a school and conference record with 11 team sacks.  

  • As a result, ODU held Lake Erie (5-5, 2-4 G-MAC) to negative net rushing yards for the second time in three seasons.  

  • Eddie Miller-Garrett (Newark, N.J.) also made history Saturday, setting a school and Great Midwest Athletic Conference record with 3.5 sacks.  

  • Overall, six different Panther defenders recorded at least one sack, with Jaylin Garner (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and Michael Powers (West Mansfield, Ohio) joining Miller-Garrett with multiple sacks.  

  • Powers paced a balanced tackling effort for ODU with eight stops.  

  • Senior Dauson Dales (Defiance, Ohio) also recorded eight tackles, one sack and two pass breakups.  

  • Kylen McGill (Middletown, Ohio) and Jayden Hill (Gahanna, Ohio) pitched in seven tackles. Hill also recovered a fumble, forced by senior Chance Canady (Columbus, Ohio) 

  • Overall, ODU held a 275-188 advantage in total offense.  

  • Senior Frederick Pitts V (Huber Heights, Ohio) and Travis Whittaker (Gahanna, Ohio) combined for 187 rushing yards on 30 attempts. Pitts rushed 13 times for 102 yards and one score, while Whittaker totaled 85 rushing yards and added an eight-yard touchdown reception.  

  • Senior Evan Ernst (Mason, Ohio) threw three passing touchdowns for the third time this fall.  

  • Austin Davis (Wooster, Ohio) and Colby Rider (Barren Springs, Va.) each registered a touchdown reception.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Panthers forced the Storm into punts on their first two possessions before causing a turnover on LEC's third offensive drive.  

  • ODU took advantage of the giveaway, scoring the game's first points, a 28-yard field goal from senior Jed Quackenbush (Newark, Ohio), with 10:44 showing on the second quarter clock.  

  • The Quackenbush field goal was the lone score of the first half. 

  • The Black & Gold scored a touchdown on its first two offensive possessions of the second half. 

  • Senior David Turner (Fort Wayne, Ind.) set up the first score of the second half with an 82-yard punt return. Rider scored on the ensuing play. 

  • On the next drive, Pitts gashed the Storm for 50 rushing yards on three plays, putting ODU in front 17-0 with 9:51 remaining in the third quarter, a lead they would take into the start of the fourth period.  

  • Ernst tossed two touchdown passes to Davis and Whittaker in the fourth quarter to give the Panthers a 31-0 win.

  • Ohio Dominican is set to close out the regular season with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Hillsdale on Saturday, Nov. 13.
