INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Midwest Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, presented by Under Armour, was released Tuesday, Aug. 13.
The Panthers received 33 points, which ranked 12th in the preseason prognosis. Hillsdale, who has won back-to-back GMAC Tournament championships, is the favorite again this fall, as the Chargers tallied 10 first place votes and 142 points. Findlay picked up the three remaining first place votes and had 135 points. Tiffin rounded out the top three with 116 points.
Walsh (107) also surpassed the century mark for fourth, while Lake Erie (98) and Cedarville (94) come in at fifth and sixth respectively. The remainder of the poll includes Malone (83), Kentucky Wesleyan (65), Trevecca Nazarene (47), Ursuline (39), Ohio Valley (37), Ohio Dominican (33) and Alderson Broaddus (18).
The 2019 campaign will mark the first time since 2014 the GMAC will not have designated divisions for its participating volleyball institutions. ODU is entering its third season in the Great Midwest.
Under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Jenn Fekpe, the Panthers are scheduled to return seven letter winners from last season. ODU also has nine incoming athletes, including seven first-year performers and two transfer students.
The Black & Gold do have the luxury of returning two of the top point scorers in the GMAC last year in sophomore Amanda Remmetter (Springfield, Ohio) and junior Alexis Young (Gahanna, Ohio). The duo averaged 4.16 and 3.39 points per set, respectively. Remmetter also led the conference and ranked among the top 25 nationally in attacks per set at 12.01.
ODU is set to begin its season with four matches in three days at the Ferris State Invitational Sept. 5-7. The Panthers open the campaign at 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 5, against the host Bulldogs, who were ranked No. 14 in the final 2018 AVCA National Poll.
